The Church Office has closed for the traditional summer vacation. Hope and Donna will be in the office for a brief period once a week. They will usually be in on Wednesdays, but that may change due to travel plans, so we suggest calling or emailing first. They will NOT be checking voice mails or emails remotely. Regular office hours will resume after Labor Day on
Wednesday, September 6.
Messiah Baptist Church has invited us to attend a book discussion group. They are reading "What Then We Must Do" by Gar Alperovitz. The meetings will be held July 13, July 27, August 10, and August 24 (all Thursdays) from 7 pm to 8 pm. A variety of local clergy will be attending and facilitating the discussions. The discussion questions for the first two sessions are:
1.
As you read, make a note of anything that puzzled you or didn’t make sense; we’ll start the discussion by making sure we’re all on the same page.
2.
What was the most exciting thing in the first part of the book?
3.
Think of an example in your experience of the downside of “remembering the future.”
4.
What’s the difference between systemic problems and political problems?
5.
What accounts for the success of the American economy in producing increasing opportunity for most workers from 1945 to about 1973?
6.
What do you believe Martin Luther King, Jr., meant when he spoke about “Democratic Socialism” – and why was he hesitant to use these words in public?
7.
What issues make it difficult to establish worker ownership of factories and corporations? What are the benefits?
8.
Are there credit unions or Community Development Corporations in which you or your church are involved? Should you or your church be involved?
9.
What “dominant ideological patterns” do our churches try to change?
