Waste Service contract to deliver better value, more services

Cumberland Council has awarded a tender to URM for the collection of kerbside waste, dumped rubbish and pre-booked pick up.  The new waste service was awarded at Council's 28 June Meeting and will deliver more than $18.8m in savings over the next eight and a half years. This represents a 25 per cent reduction on existing service costs.
  
Residents will also benefit from additional services, including a green bin for plant waste at no extra cost and the removal of reported dumped rubbish within one working day. Council will shortly release details of an app that will allow residents to report dumped rubbish 24/7. 
  
The savings and additional security built into the contract means that Council will no longer need to maintain the large waste reserve of the former Holroyd Council. Therefore all 34,992 residential properties in the former Holroyd area will be refunded $210. Check your rates notice or visit  www.cumberland.nsw.gov.au for more information.    
  
URM will start in August 2017. Over the coming months residents will be able to opt in to receiving their green bin. More information will be published on Council's website as it becomes available.

Support local democracy- work on election day 

In just under two months local residents will elect 15 new Councillors to represent the five wards of Cumberland: Regents Park, South Granville, Granville, Greystanes and Wentworthville.  Elections are a major logistical exercise with millions of NSW electors (or voters) casting their vote at thousands of polling places across the state. For this to run smoothly, the NSW Electoral Commission hires casual staff to work on election day. 

The NSW Electoral Commission is currently looking for people to work on the day of the NSW Local Council Election, Saturday 9 September 2017.  This will be n ot only an enjoyable day but a unique opportunity to experience Australian democracy firsthand.  If you are interested in working on election day, please submit your Expression of Interest .
 
   Play your part in supporting local democracy by working for the NSW Electoral Commission on election day.
Auburn Park re-opens to fanfare

Auburn Park re-opened with fanfare on Saturday 8 July, 2017. Local residents enjoyed a free barbecue lunch, face painting, cup cakes, Zumba and skills workshops with the GWS Giants. The revamped park boasts new:
  • Roads, paths and solar-powered lighting
  • Amenities building
  • Outdoor fitness space and equipment
  • Shade structure and park furniture
  • Cricket pitch and net
  • New, eye-catching water feature
  • Landscaping, including trees, shrubs, groundcovers and turf
  • Expanded playing fields

A review is needed before a roadmap is developed for the future of the historic estate in Guildford. The Administrator indicated a preference to demolish derelict McCredie House to improve the curtilage of the 1891 built Linnwood House.

Future of pools goes to the poll...
Residents will answer a yes/no question about the management of Council's five pools at the upcoming NSW Local Council Elections. An engagement campaign including letterbox drop will be rolled out ahead of the election.

Suite of draft community and culture policies adopted...
The following policies were adopted without amendment: CCTV in Public Spaces, Seniors' Units for Independent Living, Access and Equity and Art and Cultural Collection. The Volunteer's Policy was adopted with amendments.

Tenders awarded...
DWP Australia was awarded a tender for $772k for architectural services for the Granville Multipurpose Centre and Axis Construction was awarded a tender for $1.8m to build a new amenities building at Guildford Park.  

Follow up from Auburn Public Inquiry...
Street closure applications will be treated by the Cumberland Local Traffic Committee, with affected residents being given the opportunity to make a submission to the Committee beforehand. A policy is being prepared limiting helicopter landings on Council land for emergencies only. 

Transport for NSW request to run double-decker buses on Council Roads...
Council has no objection to double-decker buses running on the M92 bus route through Lidcombe, with residents to benefit from increased seating: 100 seats compared to 65 on a single deck bus.

Council begins reform of Section 94 developer contributions...
Residents will benefit from increased investment in infrastructure and better handling of developer contributions after Council adopted reforms to Section 94 (S94) contributions. Learn more

Council has a once in a life opportunity to transform the Duck River corridor into world class green space. Council will receive (non-monetary) support from Canterbury Bankstown Council; conversations with the City of Parramatta Council are ongoing. Council is determined to go-it alone if necessary.

Council's investment portfolio has a current market value of $152m. So far in 2017 Council's portfolio earned $4.6m in interest, which is $280k higher than budgeted.
 
Merrylands Revitalisation Expenditure...
Council has spent $27m on land acquisitions and $2.5m on legal/consultancy fees for the Merrylands Revitalisation Project.
