Dear Skokie Families,
We have officially completed our first five day week of the year together, and couldn't be ending with a more beautiful weekend. Many classes have spent time outside on campus this week or out in the community on field trips. It has been a pleasure to settle back into the school routine and see our students and teachers establish a bond with each other in their classes.
As the rhythm of the school year picks up speed, I want to take this week's newsletter to highlight our Future Ready D36 Master Facilities Planning Process and encourage our entire school community to become involved. Winnetka is home to five uniquely beautiful school buildings, all with historical significance of their own. Over Winnetka's 158 years of serving its public school children, it has also been home to a number of other school buildings (Lakeside School and Horace Mann School among two). These buildings were built in their time to accommodate the needs of the community and its children, growing as they could and evolving as was needed over the years. Even our current buildings have seen an evolution over time: Hubbard Woods, originally housed Kindergarten through 8th grade for the northern corner of Winnetka. When The Skokie School was built, it became home to the 6th through 8th graders, seeing additions in the 1930s and again in the 1960s. In time, growth in the community led to the construction of Crow Island School and later Carleton Washburne School. The timeline of Winnetka's schools is continued evidence that the community prioritizes high quality public education and wants only the very best for its students.
We are in an exciting position this year to work together for the first time in 20 years as a community to plan for Winnetka's future. We have launched an Educational Master Facilities Planning Process, entitled Future Ready D36. This is a
holistic process that will measure, validate, quantify and qualify opportunities to align our school facilities, our enrollment, and our vision for teaching and learning to meet the needs of current and future students in a fiscally responsible manner. In order to best begin this process, the community is invited to participate in building-based presentations that will not only afford attendees the opportunity to learn more about the current status of our buildings, but ask questions and share thoughts on what could be possible for our schools. The first of these presentations takes place at The Skokie School on September 25 at 7:00pm in The Community Room. I would encourage you to save this date on your family calendar and join us for the evening. The dates of all presentations are listed below as well.

"Not Quite Little Kid, Not Quite Teenager: The Developmental Progression of the Middle School Child"
--Skokie School Community Room--Join Principal Tess and Principal Kanne for an informational morning session focusing on the ins and outs of the growing middle school child. We will spend time exploring both the academic and social-emotional needs appropriate to 5th-8th grade children, how they change over that four year span, as well as the neurological changes that contribute to these needs. Friday, October 6--9:30am "Zones of Regulation" --Skokie School Community Room-- Join the Social Workers at The Skokie School and Kelly Tess, Principal, to learn more about The Zones of Regulation, a Socio-Emotional strategy that helps students identify their readiness for learning based on their physical and emotional help. This is a strategy we are using building-wide, and is a great resource for parents to utilize at home as well.

The Skokie Garden Needs Your Help!
The Happy Tillers at Skokie are looking to give our garden a bit of a make-over. If you have any unwanted brick pavers going unused at your home, we would love to put them to use. Please email [email protected] if you would like to donate any unwanted brick pavers to the Skokie Garden. Thank you!

Grand Food Center receipts
that you saved over the summer. Collecting
Grand receipts
is an easy and no-cost way for you to support the Skokie-Washburne PTO (so ultimately our schools!) and also support The
Grand
, a fabulous local grocery store.
It's simple, too. Just collect and drop off your
Grand receipts in the colorfully wrapped boxes labeled "
Grand
receipts
" located in Washburne's office and Skokie's lobby. In fact, your 5th, 6th, 7th, or 8th grader can easily get involved in the process and drop off the
receipts themselves. The
Grand
generously donates 3% of the pre-tax amount to the PTO on each
receipt
collected from their Winnetka or Glencoe stores.

Fall MAP Testing
District 36 has established a robust suite of assessments utilizing multiple measures to provide information on student performance. One of those tools is the Measure of Academic Progress (MAP) test.
Fall testing will occur between September 11 - 22 with all students in Grades 3 - 8 taking one Reading Test and one Math test.
Your child's building or teacher will inform you of his or her specific testing dates.
