Highlights  from Building Bridges Seminar for Catholic Educators
Group photo of Building Bridges participants.

Sixty Catholic educators from all over the state gathered in Nashville, Tennessee for a three-day training workshop led by the TN Holocaust Commission in partnership The Diocese and Catholic schools throughout the state of Tennessee, The Temple Ohabai Sholom, Vanderbilt University, Aquinas College, and the Anti-Defamation League.  This unique professional development opportunity was designed for Catholic school educators to learn how to teach about the Holocaust, antisemitism and its lasting effects on contemporary society.

The workshop consisted of an in-depth study of the history of Antisemitism,  best practice instructional strategies for teaching about the Holocaust, and the testimonies of two child survivors, John Koenigsberg and Frances Cutler Hahn.  Jewish folksinger, Batsheva Capek performed music that was played and sung in the camps and ghettos during the Holocaust. The workshop concluded with a traditional Shabbat dinner and service led by Rabbi Mark Schiftan.

Below are some of the highlights from the Building Bridges Seminar:

Dr. A.J. Levine delivers a talk titled, "From Judaism to Anti-Judaism."

Educators analyze historical documents which include antisemitic content in an activity titled the "Bricks of Hate."

Sister Mary Anne listens as a teaching activity is explained  at Aquinas College.

Two educators listen intently to Frances Cutler Hahn.
"Deadly Medicine" Exhibit Opens at  ETSU

The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum's traveling exhibition, "Deadly Medicine: Creating  the Master Race" is now open at East Tennessee State University at the Reece Medical Museum July 31 through September 30, 2017. The exhibit  traces the eugenics movement and its history from the early 20th-century to the Nazi regime's "science of race." It also challenges viewers to reflect on the present-day interest in genetic manipulation.  The exhibit is free and open to the public.

For more information and to schedule a tour for your community or school group, contact Spenser Brenner, Exhibition Coordinator, at the Reece Museum at 423-439-6620 or at [email protected]
