Canada's climate-change plan threatens business competitiveness, Trudeau warned
Wingrove, Bloomberg News                                       July 25, 2017

Canada's climate-change plan and other government measures are heaping costs on businesses and pushing them to a breaking point, the Chamber of Commerce says in a warning to Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

Chamber President Perrin Beatty, in a letter Tuesday, asked Trudeau to find ways to cut business costs to offset the impact of an emissions plan that includes a minimum carbon price beginning next year. Failure to do so could mean "seriously undermining Canada's competitiveness," he said.

Preparing Canada for the changing global economy
Liberalizing Canada's economic environment, while ensuring vulnerable workers are not left behind, are the keys to success in our new global reality.                                            Written by Trevor Tombe  July 26, 2017

Canada is a small, open economy; our prosperity depends on international trade. But as the global economic landscape changes rapidly, many are apprehensive about what the future holds. Will political developments thicken our southern border? Can our companies compete in an increasingly interconnected and digital world? Can our economy attract more international investors and multinational producers? These are important questions that, if we act wisely, can be answered in Canada's favour....continue reading

Managing employees during tough times

As a small business owner, you will be faced with difficult choices during difficult times like an economic downturn or a decrease in demand for your product or service. In order to stay competitive, you must streamline operations and offer creative responses to external threats. It is critical to encourage innovation and make the kinds of changes that are necessary to ensure that your business succeeds today and in the future.
When times are tough, business owners often resort to layoffs as a cost-saving measure. However, laying off employees can damage your business and impair its ability to succeed in the long term. Layoffs incur direct costs, including severance pay, administration fees and legal fees, which immediately affect your bottom line. There are also less tangible costs like the skills, knowledge and experience that are lost when an employee is let go.... continue reading

Targeted infrastructure investments key to solving economic challenges
The Canadian Chamber of Commerce recently released a new report that finds focused infrastructure investments can help solve many of the major economic challenges that Canada faces.

By Angela Gismondi Jul 27, 2017

The report outlines key issues the government should target before beginning 2018 budget deliberations.

"Governments like to treat infrastructure like peanut butter and spread it all around to make sure every corner gets some," said Ryan Greer, director of transportation and infrastructure policy at the Canadian Chamber of Commerce. "Our whole focus with this (report) is just to say 10 to 12 years from now what do we want Canada to look like, what do we want to be some of the real key problems that we've solved?..continue reading

Canada's economy posts 'blow out' growth; dollar jumps
Friday, Jul. 28, 2017
David Parkinson Economics Reporter, Globe and Mail

Canada's economy continued its hot streak in May, riding broad-based growth led by a surge in oil output, beating already high market expectations and setting off another wave of buying in the high-flying Canadian dollar.

Statistics Canada reported that Canada's real gross domestic product jumped 0.6 per cent in May from April, on a seasonally adjusted basis - triple the solid 0.2-per-cent growth that economists had predicted. That matched the strongest single-month growth that the economy has posted in the past six years. Compared with 12 months ago, real GDP was up 4.6 per cent - the fastest year-over-year growth in nearly 17 years....continue reading

This year, the Canadian Chamber of Commerce outlined 10 ways to improve economic success, along with specific recommendations to advocate throughout the year.

4. WORK WITH BUSINESS TO COMBAT CLIMATE CHANGE AND MAINTAIN CANADA'S COMPETITIVENESS

Climate change is an ecological issue, but confronting it is also a business challenge. In addition to other measures, governments are looking to the private sector to mobilize money and technology to reduce the emissions that are already damaging the Earth's climate. For both the global ecology and the global economy, it is imperative these policies succeed. A survey by the World Economic Forum listed the possible failure of climate change mitigation and adaptation as "the risk with the greatest potential impact in 2016."  .... continue reading
