News & Updates from the Honors College
Welcome Back from Dr. Rita Bailey, Dean of the Honors College

Welcome to Kennesaw State University and to the Honors College!

There will be learning experiences you have in college that you will never forget, and our goal is to make your cumulative experiences in Honors stand out among them. Some academic programs focus on the  products  of learning-generally an understanding of a subject or body of content required for a major.  Honors is different.  An Honors education focuses on   enhancing the process of learning while maximizing learning outcomes with exceptional learning experiences.

We're entering the first year of our new Honors flexible curriculum. In this new approach to Honors learning, students achieve the 8 Foundations of Honors Learning by freely choosing from 8 Honors Learning Experience options such as Honors courses, Honors Travel, and Honors Contracts. The 8 Foundations of Honors Learning gained by participating in the Honors Program include Leadership, Critical Thinking, Interdisciplinary Learning, Information Fluency, Professionalism, Appreciation of Diverse Viewpoints, Effective Communication, and Creativity and Innovation. These foundations are critical to success in every discipline and field of study. We are also offering a new  Honors designation for  students that can be earned in two academic years, that of  Honors in the Major . Students will be able to earn this designation if they  have  earned between 45 and 60 credits and also  have  a minimum of 4 remaining semesters  at Kennesaw State University . All students earning the Honors Scholar and Honors in the Major designations complete an Honors Capstone or Thesis in their major area of study.

We are excited to welcome new and continuing Honors College students to Kennesaw State University Honors College this fall! We hope you will participate fully in the exceptional academic and social events offered to Honors students, and join and actively participate in the Honors Club registered student organization. Also, we hope students will consider planning ahead to  apply to serve as an Honors Peer Mentor, and Honors Club Officer, and/or to  join us in one of the avai lable Honors Travel experiences.

A special class of students are inaugurating  the first  Honors Discovery class  this fall. An Honors Discovery is a non-graded Honors Learning Experience on a special topic of study that students can experience outside of typical course structures. This fall, the Dean of the College of the  Arts, Dr. Patricia Poulter, is  teach ing  a n Honors  Discovery entitled   Bone Records- The Story of Censorship, X-ray Film, and Bootleg Music in Soviet Russia.  Students engaged in this study will also travel to Nashville  early this  fall to visit the music studios of recording artists Jack White and John and Martina McBride, who are engaged in projects related to the Bone Records. These artists have invited Dr. Poulter and students engaged in this  Honors  Discovery to visit their studios as a part of their Honors Learning experience.

I hope you have a wonderful semester and year. As always, please feel free to contact me with any questions or comments at  [email protected]  or by phone at (470) 578-4835.  I look  forward to getting to know you as you pursue  the  a chievements  that an Honors education can  facilitate !
