Reminders and news from Archbishop McNicholas High School--September 6, 2017
McNicholas welcomes first 65th reunion

Archbishop McNicholas High School welcomed the Class of 1952 back to campus today for the school's first 65th reunion. The Class of 1952 had 31 members. Twenty-one members are still alive, and twelve attended Mass in the school's Chapel and gathered for lunch in the school library afterwards.

Patty Beckert, current McNicholas principal, and Sr. Janet Roesner '52, McNicholas principal 1966-1970. Ms. Beckert is the first female principal since 1970.
In 1915, the Sisters of St. Joseph of Medaille established a day and boarding school for girls in Mt. Washington under the name of St. Joseph Academy. In 1950, Archbishop John Timothy McNicholas designated that the Academy would become a diocesan high school and directed that it would be the first coeducational parochial high school in the Cincinnati area. On January 15, 1951, Archbishop Karl J. Alter approved changing the name of the new coed institution to Archbishop McNicholas High School, and in September, boys started attending classes.

McNicholas earns 28th consecutive STEM award

Archbishop McNicholas High School's Science Department has received The Governor's Thomas Edison Award for Excellence in STEM Education and Student Research for the 28th consecutive year. As recently as 14 years ago, McNicholas was the only Cincinnati high school to receive the award. According to The Ohio Academy of Science, the organization began presenting the award 32 years ago in 1985, so McNicholas High School's 28th consecutive award is quite remarkable and a source of great pride. Congratulations to our Science Department! Read more here.

Campus Ministry

"Where Two or Three Are Gathered..."
As we will hear in the  Gospel reading proclaimed this coming Sunday, Jesus reminds us that "where two or three are gathered in my name, there am I in the midst of them" (Matthew 18:20). It is a good reminder to us of the many ways that we might become more aware of Christ's presence in our midst-when we take the time to pray, to come together for Communion, to deepen our understanding of Scripture, and also in our encounters with friends, family, classmates, and colleagues. For this reason, we extend the invitation to members of the McNicholas community to join with us in prayer.

Friday Morning Mass at 7:00 am
With no school on Friday, September 8th (Faculty Day of Renewal) and Friday, September 29th (Walk Day), there will be no Friday morning Mass in the chapel on those days. Fr. Dave Endres will return to preside at the Friday morning Mass on Friday, September 15th, and Fr. Paul Ruwe will be with us on Friday, September 22nd. All are welcome and invited to attend.

Opening All School Mass
The first all school liturgy of the 2017-2018 school year will take place on Thursday, September 7 at 10:20 a.m. in the sanctuary of Guardian Angels parish, which is located directly across Beechmont Avenue from our campus. As with each of our all school liturgies, parents and family of students are always welcome to join us as your schedule permits, and we especially extend the invitation to parents of the Class of 2021 as we welcome the first year students into our community formally for the first time. Pastor of Our Lord Christ the King parish Fr. Ed Smith (a 1974 alumnus of McNicholas) will preside and Guardian Angels pastor Fr. Tom King will concelebrate.

Responding to Racism, Together in Christ
In a  pastoral statement intended for all within the Archdiocese of Cincinnati, Archbishop Dennis Schnurr has issued a call for "prayer, dialogue, and tangible action" in response to the "bigotry and violence that descended upon Charlottesville, Virginia." This coming Saturday, September 9th, there will be an opportunity to gather with Archbishop Schnurr and many other Parish Respect Life and Social Actions leaders from around the Archdiocese for  Together in Christ: Saying Yes to Missionary Discipleship. The gathering will take place at the Bartlett Center at the Athenaeum of Ohio, which is located at 6616 Beechmont Avenue.
