2017-18 Theatre Season Debuts
Comedy takes center stage this weekend.

The 2017-18 theatre season debuted with mayhem and hilarity during opening night as the student thespians performed Neil Simon's comedy Rumors. Performances continue tonight and Saturday, September 16 at 7:00 p.m. in the Lake Park High School East Campus Dice Auditorium.

A madcap, slamming-door farce, Rumors is set in a large home just outside New York City. The characters are arriving as guests at a 10th anniversary dinner. The first couple to arrive discovers that one of their hosts is missing and the other has been shot and is unconscious.  The guests assume the events stem from a scandal and create a cover-up that draws the remaining party guests into the confusion.

The leading characters are Chris Gorman performed by Clarissa Consoli (11); Ken Gorman by Jay Harrison (10); Claire Ganz by Nicolette Pilalis (10); Lenny Ganz by Ben Herring (12); Ernie Cusack by Michael Pavone (12); Cookie Cusack by Lillian Grabowski-Grant (11); Glenn Cooper by Seth Caines (11); Cassie Cooper by Isabella Koptik (12); Officer Welch by Brooke Heitman (12); and Officer Pudney by Demi Apostolakos (10).

Tickets, available at the door, are $5 for adults; $3 for non-Lake Park students; and free to seniors, Lake Park students and children younger than 13. C ontact [email protected] or (630) 295-5313 for more info.

Boys Soccer Team Leads Coat Drive
Lancers demonstrate sportsmanship on and off the field.

Lake Park Lancer boys soccer participated in the annual PepsiCo Showdown tournament last weekend. Each year the tournament casts a spotlight on a community need. For 2017, the community need identified was support for suicide awareness, more specifically teen suicide awareness. Chicago's teen suicide rate is the highest in the nation.

All participating tournament teams collected jackets to provide comfort and warmth to teens in need and even added encouraging notes in the jacket pockets. Special thanks to Lake Park student athletes who donated nearly 100 jackets with inspirational messages.
NMSQT Registration Open for Juniors
Registration materials are due Wednesday, September 20.

On  Wednesday, October 11 , Lake Park High School will offer the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (NMSQT) to all interested juniors. The NMSQT serves as the qualifying test for the National Merit Scholarship Program. Students who earn excellent scores on this test receive prestigious status as National Merit Scholars and may also qualify for some form of financial assistance when applying to colleges and universities. This test measures a student's critical reading ability, math problem-solving skills, and writing skills. Since it is a skills-based test, students need not recall facts from their coursework.

Juniors may register for this test by mail or in person. To register by mail, download, complete and return the registration form with $20 cash or check (payable to Lake Park High School) to Ms. Helms, Lake Park High School, 500 W. Bryn Mawr Ave., Roselle, IL 60172. If registering in person, bring the completed form with payment to Ms. Helms in the West Campus Counseling Office. Registration materials are due by Wednesday, September 20. Since the College Board sets this deadline, late registrations cannot be accepted.

On test day, students should arrive to West Campus at 7:22 a.m. and report to the main gym. Once there, students will need a photo ID for check-in. Students should also bring two #2 pencils and an approved calculator. This test will run until approximately 11:00 a.m. Students will return to class for the remainder of the day.  For questions, contact your student's counselor at (630) 295-5341.
Social Studies Department Recognition
State honor recognizes preparing students to be effective citizens.

The Illinois Civic Mission Coalition announced today that Lake Park High School has completed the recommitment process for the Illinois Democracy Schools Initiative. This distinction commemorates 10 years of fostering a school climate that cultivates and models civic dispositions and builds strong relationships within the surrounding community.

Since 2006, 67 Illinois high schools have successfully completed a school-wide civic assessment to be recognized as Democracy Schools. Lake Park, one of the original Democracy Schools, has been vigilant about creating opportunities and experiences that empower students to nurture and sustain our democracy, including engaging in current and controversial issue discussions, participating in democratic simulations, and providing service learning opportunities in the community.

For this long-term commitment to civic learning initiatives, Lake Park will receive a stipend from the
Robert R. McCormick Foundation as well as a new banner for public display.
