Russell's Ritings,
As we transition from the "lazy, hazy days of summer" to fall we feel the cool air (41 degrees this morning), we see the fall color, and this morning I heard my first elk bugle of the year.
We are also changing seasons in the church. From Cowboy Sunday to Church at the Ranch to VBS to Fall Festival, we now move toward program planning, nominations, budget building and on to Charge Conference.
It comes to mind that many have never seen the Stewardship Creed of our church. As we enter stewardship time let me share it with you:
OUR STEWARDSHIP CREED
We believe in God, Creator of the world; and in Jesus Christ the Redeemer of creation. We believe in the Holy Spirit, through whom we acknowledge God's gifts, and we repent of our sin in misusing these gifts to idolatrous ends.
We, as stewards, affirm the goodness of life. We rejoice in accepting the abundance with which God has endowed the earth. We commit ourselves to participate in God's redemptive intention for the word: that all people should be able to live in peace and to enjoy the days of their lives free from hunger, disease, hopelessness, and oppression.
As stewards, we commit ourselves to love and justice among persons and nations in the equitable distribution of income and wealth. We affirm the ownership of property as a trust from God. We acknowledge the responsibility to share the abundance of creation. We regard the conditions created by poverty to be demeaning to the human spirit.
As stewards, we insist on the efficient management of human and natural resources in the production of the goods and services needed by the human community. We insist on conserving resources in order to sustain permanently the fruitfulness of the earth.
As stewards, we give generously of time, money, and service through the church to the world. We affirm the tradition of tithing as a disciplined practice of giving.
As stewards, we acknowledge the necessity of civil government. We encourage all people to participate in the activities of responsible citizenship.
We believe that Christian stewardship is a joyful response to God's gifts; it is a spiritual understanding of the practical and economic aspects of all of life.
Our stewardship affirms the redemptive power of the gospel of Jesus Christ, and our confidence in God's final victory in the world.
-- Adopted by the 1988 General Conference
This Sunday our sermon is "Trust God and Move On". The text is Exodus 14: 5-15. I hope to see ALL of you here where the folks are friendly!
Blessings,
Russell

MISSION OPPORTUNITY
COLORADO COALITION FOR THE HOMELESS
|
Just north of downtown Denver work is nearly complete on a six-story residence that will be an important step in the fight to end homelessness. RENAISSANCE DOWNTOWN LOFTS is a housing project for 100 chronically homeless individuals who are among our area's most challenged. Most will have had experience with Denver emergency services, including police, jail, and emergency rooms. The goal of Downtown Lofts is to provide these folks with stable housing and supportive services including medical, counseling and job related help.
Our Missions Committee is supporting the effort to collect new and gently used items to welcome these residents to their new homes. With enough participation, the Coalition will be able to provide each person with a "welcome home" basket of necessary supplies to begin their new life. In addition, UMCE has contributed $400 from the Missions budget to help defray the cost of mattresses and mattress covers. Occupancy is planned for the end of October, so we will be collecting items until early October.
There will be an information table available on Sunday, September 24 as well as collection boxes. Please call Jan Thurling at 720-391-9550 with questions.

Have you ever wanted to know more about your church? Come and join Pastor Russell for four Sundays as he leads us through Methodism 101.
Sunday, September 17: 9:30 - 10:20 am
THE HISTORY OF METHODISM
From the Wesleys until today we will look at how the Methodist movement has become one of the most prominent church families.
Sunday, September 24: 9:30 - 10:20 am
THE BELIEFS OF A UNITED METHODIST
Someone has said Methodism is the common denominator of the denominations. Wesley said, "If your heart is as my heart is, give me your hand for we are brothers." We will look at the diversity of belief systems within our church and also at the core beliefs we do not compromise.
Sunday, October 1: 9:30 - 10:20 am
THE ORGANIZATION OF THE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
How are we organized? What is our structure? What is "holy conferencing"? How do Bishops, Superintendents, and pastors "connect"? What is the "connectional" system? How does UMCE fit within the connection?
Sunday, October 8: 9:30 - 10:20 am
A LOOK AT UMCE
What makes our own local church so special? Where have we come from, where are we, and where are we going?
Sunday, October 15, 22, 29: 9:30 - 10:20 am
HOW TO GROW A CHURCH (led by Pastor Russell)
During these weeks we will look at the principles of church growth, the keys to church growth, the costs of church growth, and strategies which will help UMCE become the church God wants it to become.
