Dr. Ilan Tamir

Presented by ChaiVillageLA member, Ilan Tamir, MD, this discussion will focus on a number of topics that will help you get the most out of your visits with your healthcare professionals.

Learn how to prepare for your doctor's visit so you can convey the most concise and relevant information and maximize the usefulness of your time with your doctor.

Understand how the information you provide to your primary care provider may be different from what you might share with a specialist or other healthcare provider.

Learn about common issues related to insurance and billing as well as what documents should be maintained in your home to help you keep accurate medical records.

Questions? Contact Susan Tamir at susietamir@gmail.com or (310) 854-7744.

Join ChaiVillageLA and villagers from across the country for a webinar in honor of the 15 th anniversary of Boston’s Beacon Hill Village. The featured speaker is the extraordinary Dr. Atul Gawande, renowned surgeon, public health researcher, writer for The New Yorker and Slate , and author of books including Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End.  Rabbi Laura Geller and Rabbi Zoë Klein will lead a discussion following Dr. Gawande’s talk.

“A few conclusions become clear when we understand this: that our most cruel failure in how we treat the sick and the aged is the failure to recognize that they have priorities beyond merely being safe and living longer; that the chance to shape one’s story is essential to sustaining meaning in life; that we have the opportunity to refashion our institutions, our culture, and our conversations in ways that transform the possibilities for the last chapters of everyone’s lives.”

“Our ultimate goal, after all, is not a good death but a good life to the very end.”
Dr. Atul Gawande
Museum Tour of the Marciano Art Foundation

Marciano Art Foundation

ChaiVillageLA has reserved 25 no-charge tickets for a docent-led tour of LA's newest art museum, the Marciano Art Foundation.

Established by art collectors Maurice and Paul Marciano, and located in the former Scottish Rite Masonic Temple on Wilshire Boulevard, the museum features "works by well-established, mid-career, and emerging artists, predominantly from 1900 to the present."

Our group will gather at 1:45 PM sharp at the sculpture garden outside of the main entrance on Lucerne Boulevard. The tour will end at approximately 3:00 PM.

There is free parking available in the lot directly behind the Foundation, accessible off of Lucerne Boulevard. Because parking is very limited, the museum has asked us to carpool if possible. Please contact Sue Rosenblum at 310-842-8413 (home), 310-429-0052 (cell) or SusanSRosenblum@gmail.com to let her know whether you can drive others or would like a ride.

The apartment before the move in
The apartment after the move in, fully furnished!
This past Saturday members of ChaiVillageLA helped a homeless mom and her four children move into their own apartment in Lawndale. It was an amazing feeling to see this empty apartment fill up with items donated by our Village members. Working alongside staff from PATH (People Assisting the Homeless) Village members assembled furniture and decorated the apartment. It was a great day and we look forward to doing it again soon.

Thank you to all ChaiVillageLA members who donated items and a special thank you to those who joined me at the move-in including Eileen Dardick, Myrna Hant, Ellen Isaacs, Stuart Goldurs, Sandy Silas, Pegi Burdick and Devorah Servi.

We should all feel very proud that we are helping to repair our world right here in Los Angeles.
Italian Feast Potluck
by Lora Jerugim

Last Sunday, more than 20 members of the Culinary Interest Group met for a wonderful Italian potluck dinner. We gathered in the lovely home of our gracious hosts, Barbara and Dale Joyner. Apart from enjoying the delicious and varied menu, it gave our members an opportunity to get to know each other better and enhance our friendships. In addition, Lucienne Aroesty and Bobbie Allen shared some interesting information with us about the history of the Italian Jewish community.

In our Jewish culture, it seems that special occasions often center around food. This event was no exception! Many thanks not only to the Joyners for their hospitality, but to Lucienne and her committee for organizing and executing this delightful event.

OUR MISSION
The vast majority of adults want to remain in their homes and neighborhoods as they get older, but sometimes this takes a supportive community. ChaiVillageLA is a vibrant, multi-synagogue, multi-generational community that enables congregants to age in place in their own homes by providing assistance to one another and enriching each other’s lives, as part of a self-governing village supported by Jewish values.
