Keeping King's Chapel's families and friends  connected from week-to-week with news from the Church School!
Church School Begins!
September 17

We've waited all summer. Finally, Church School is here! This Sunday, after the 9AM Morning Light service, children will have a chance to catch up with old friends and Church School staff as they are introduced to this year's program. Expect music, prayer, stories of faith, games, and lots of fun!
Upcoming Church School Events

September 24

Beacon Hill Fall HillFest

The annual fundraiser for the Beacon Hill Civic Association is happening on  Saturday, September 24 and King's Chapel will be present to welcome our neighbors and greet those who may not know of our many programs.  We will offer face painting, little bubble jars, and King's Chapel crowns for children at our table at the festival. Our Little Chapel will be open for viewing where members of our Church School staff will be hosting cookie decorating, a sing along with our Music Teacher, Skip, and GIANT bubbles!
If you are interested in volunteering to assist King's Chapel during the event, please email Rev. Amelia Nugent at  assistant.minister@kings-chapel.org .

Joyful Noise

Children of all ages are invited to join Music Teacher Skip Lewan for an hour of musical fun and learning. Joyful Noise begins promptly at 9:55AM and ends at 10:55AM! Come prepared to play an orff, shake some maracas, or use your voice to make a Joyful Noise.

October 15

Morning Light Performance

All that practice time with Skip will be put to good use as our talented children will be performing for us during the 9AM Morning Light service.
Godly Play and Seekers!

This year, the younger children in our Church School program will learn about the stories of our faith through a Montessori-inspired curriculum called Godly Play. The Church School teachers have been trained to teach this curriculum and expertly tell these living stories to your children. Classic biblical tales and parables will be presented in ways that will allow this younger group to begin internalizing these stories and they begin to think about religious language and the loving mystery that is God.

The Seekers, our middle school group, will dive deeper into questions of faith: What does it mean to be a Christian? What does that mean for us at King's Chapel, a Christian Unitarian congregation located in the middle of one of our country's oldest cities? We'll take a closer look at Biblical questions such as: Who is my neighbor? What is the Kingdom of Heaven in the parables taught by Jesus? Our Seekers should expect to be challenged, but they should also expect to learn, to grow, and to have fun every step of the way.
Volunteers Needed!

In order to provide a more welcoming atmosphere for our Church School families, King's Chapel will be adhering to Safe Church guidelines for all Church School events this year. In order to do this,  adult volunteers are needed to be present while the members of our Church School staff teach the curriculum.

We will need at least two volunteers from 10 am - 11 am for the following Sundays. Volunteers are welcome to leave early to attend the 11AM Morning Prayer Service.

What You Missed!

We've been busy preparing rooms in the Parish House for children of all ages. Below is our new nursery room, a safe space for families when little ones need a place to be changed, fed, or simply calm down after a rough morning. Next is our new Godly Play set up where children will learn stories about our faith and create plenty of fantastic pieces of art for your refrigerator at home.

From the Church School Director

Have you ever heard someone tell a story? I'm not asking if you've read a story or had a story read to you. I'm asking if you've ever heard someone capture your complete attention by verbally reciting a tale with such gusto that the story stays with you. It becomes a part of you. Something you refer back to over and over again throughout your entire life.

This is our goal this year with Godly Play. Katie and I have been hard at work preparing the Godly Play room, putting together teaching materials that go with stories from the Bible, and practicing every syllable as we prepare to recite them to your children. The biblical stories we learn when we are young and come back to as we grow older never cease to teach us or give us a new perspective. The parables Jesus told have a way of living and growing with us as we experience all the changes life has to offer.

This is not the Sunday School I grew up with in which star-shaped stickers were given for memorizing Bible verses out of context. These are living stories that allow children to wonder about faith and to play as children should. In the spirit of the Godly Play curriculum, won't you come play with us?
