Collect of the Day
O God, because without you we are not able to please you, mercifully grant that your Holy Spirit may in all things direct and rule our hearts; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
Collect for Social Justice
A lmighty God, whom truly to know is everlasting life: Grant us so perfectly to know your Son Jesus Christ to be the way, the truth, and the life, that we may steadfastly follow his steps in the way that leads to eternal life; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord , who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.

Collect for the Human Family
O God, you made us in your own image and redeemed us through Jesus your Son: Look with compassion on the whole human family; take away the arrogance and hatred which infect our hearts; break down the walls that separate us; unite us in bonds of love; and work through our struggle and confusion to accomplish you purposes on earth; that, in your good time, all nations and races may sever you in harmony around your heavenly throne; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

God, our Creator, we are held in your everlasting arms,
Jesus, our Savior, we are healed by your wounded hands,
Holy Spirit, be present as we reach out to one another in love.

Reflection

"I am not accustomed to rejoicing in things that are small, hidden, and scarcely noticed by the people around me. I am generally ready and prepared to receive bad news, to read about wars, violence, and crimes, and to witness conflict and disarray. I always expect my visitors to talk about their problems and pain, their setbacks and disappointments, their depressions and their anguish. Somehow I have become accustomed to living with sadness, and so have lost the eyes to see the joy and the ears to hear the gladness that belongs to God and which is to be found in the hidden corners of the world.

"I have a friend who is so deeply connected with God that he can see joy where I expect only sadness. He travels much and meets countless people. When he returns home, I always expect him to tell me about the difficult economic situation of the countries he visited, about the great injustices he heard about, and the pain he has seen. But even though he is very aware of the great upheaval of the world, he seldom speaks of it. When he shares his experiences, he tells about the hidden joys he has discovered. He tells about a man, a woman, or a child who brought him hope or peace. He tells about little groups of people who are faithful to each other in the midst of all the turmoil. He tells about the small wonders of God. At times I realize that I am disappointed because I want to hear 'newspaper news,' exciting and exhilarating stories that can be talked about among friends. But he never responds to my need for sensationalism. He keeps saying: 'I saw something very small and very beautiful, something that gave me much joy.'

"This is a real discipline. It requires choosing for the light even when there is much darkness to frighten me, choosing for life even when the forces of death are so visible, and choosing for the truth even when I am surrounded with lies. I am tempted to be so impressed by the obvious sadness of the human condition that I no longer claim the joy manifesting itself in many small but very real ways. The reward of choosing joy is joy itself. Living among people with mental disabilities has convinced me of that. There is so much rejection, pain, and woundedness among us, but once you choose to claim the joy hidden in the midst of all suffering, life becomes celebration. Joy never denies the sadness, but transforms it to a fertile soil for more joy."

Your Opportunity to Participate
in Grace's Spiritual Life Inventory
Grace has been invited to participate in a comprehensive survey of spiritual life that will provide us with valuable information about our faith journey as a congregation. The Spiritual Life Inventory, as it is called, was created by RenewalWorks, an Episcopal organization charged with advancing spiritual growth. Regardless of where you are in your spiritual journey, we want to hear from all adult members of the Grace community. Your results will be completely anonymous and confidential.

From September 17 through October 8, the survey/inventory will be accessible online for our congregation.
(We will send out a link to everyone on the 17th.) It will take about 20-30 minutes to complete, and you will need to do so in one sitting. The survey must be taken on a computer; it will not work on a phone or tablet. You may obtain a hard copy from the church office if necessary. It is very important that we get as close to 100 percent participation as possible.

All completed inventories will be automatically tabulated by RenewalWorks. After we get the results back, a team of about 10-12 parishioners will discuss the survey information during the fall and offer some recommendations to the congregation.

If you have any questions, please speak to Fr. Owen, Verne Becker, or Jan Valentine. Thank you in advance for your contribution!
GRACE CHURCH CHOIR OPEN HOUSE

Love to sing? The Grace Choir is currently looking for new members!  If you have a love of singing, a basic ability to read music and Thursday evenings free, then you've passed the first audition.  The next step is to attend our open rehearsal on Thursday, September 21 from 7:30-9:30pm .  Not only will you get to jump right into a fabulous choir, you'll get to meet some wonderful people.  Can't make the open house?  No problem - just contact Brandon Beachamp , organist/choirmaster, to discuss joining.

THE 9:30am FAMILY SERVICE NEEDS MUSICIANS!
We have several opportunities for you to share your musical gifts at the 9:30am service.  The Parish Choir sings on the 1st and 3rd Sundays - just come up to the choir loft at 9:00am to learn a simple piece of music for the morning.  Singers of all ages are welcome! Play and instrument or want to sing a solo/duet?  We'd love to have more involvement from our talented congregation!

Reach out to Brandon Beachamp , organist/choirmaster, to talk about how you can be involved in worship.   [email protected] Or 845-358-1297 ex. 13
ADULT SPIRITUAL FORMATION COMMISSION PRESENTS
THE MYSTICISM OF PAUL THE APOSTLE
Wednesday, October 4 6:30 to 7:45 pm-Memorial Hall
Paul was a 1 st century Christian, but he never met the incarnate Jesus. Paul lived and wrote at least 20 years before any of the gospels were written. Paul is not a theologian and does not present a systematic doctrine. What Paul writes in his epistles is not intellectual. For Paul, God is not to be thought about, but to be experienced . For Paul, the grace of God is the experience of God acting in the believer's life and is the wholly undeserved generosity of God. Grace is not a theory; it is an experience of God, grace is mystical. After his death, the mysticism of Paul was lost and we were left with the dogma we know today which says that we become saved when we believe in Jesus Christ, but salvation and its benefits are not realized until after we die. This is not the message of Paul. The benefits of faith are here and now.

After a simple dinner of soup and bread, Pat Reynolds will introduce this alternate view of Paul's writings and provide questions for group discussion and personal reflection. Please call (845-358-1297) or email Grace Church if you plan to come: [email protected]
Parting Thought

Your body is woven
from the light of heaven
Are you aware
that its purity and swiftness
is the envy of the angels
And its courage
Keeps even devils away.
