NASW National New Website Launch

NASW is pleased to announce the launch of a revised National website at SocialWorkers.org on September 20, 2017. The new site is well organized, and is easy to navigate and search- whether from a laptop, tablet, or mobile phone.

In order to launch the new site, NASW will take SocialWorkers.org offline from 9 p.m. Monday, September 18, throughout the day on Tuesday, September 19. During this maintenance, NASW's website will be unavailable. You will not be able to access any resources and tools on the website, such as your member profile, continuing education, NASW's Career Center, NASW News, or practice information.

While NASW's website is offline, NASW Member Services representatives will be available to answer questions, but will not have access to member records. NASW Member Services is available from 9:00 am to 9:00 pm ET Monday through Friday at 800.742.4089 or [email protected].

PACE Committee Votes on Endorsements

 

NASW-NJ's Political Action For Candidate Election Committee (PACE) has been evaluating candidates for political endorsements and campaign contributions. We're excited to report that final decisions have been made and will be publicized shortly. 

 

PACE is entirely funded through voluntary contributions. We need your help to support our industry by filling public offices with social workers. Members can donate by following this link.

Thanks to the hard work of the Mental Health Association in New Jersey and our other partners, the RHCF bill ( sponsored by Weinberg, T. Kean / Vainieri Huttle, Lampitt, O'Scanlon, McKnight)  was signed into law on September 13, 2017.

 

The law clarifies DCA rule making authority over free-standing residential health care facilities, and prohibits eviction of residents from such facilities, except for good cause. This solves the problem of residents enduring unsanitary and/or unsafe conditions out of fear of being evicted for complaining.

As social workers, we know that anything that threatens the well-being and livelihood of our communities becomes an issue that impacts our profession and our country. As our NASW Code of Ethics indicates, the primary mission of our profession is to enhance the human well-being of all people, help meet basic needs and empower individuals. When we entered this profession, we did so under an obligation to uphold a core set of values of service, social justice, dignity and worth of the person, importance of human relationships, and integrity which are the foundation our code of ethics is built on.

Protecting dreamers and providing them with the opportunities they have earned is more than an immigration issue. It's a human issue, a health and mental health issue. Since the election, direct care providers have seen a rise in anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. Together, there is much we can do to fight this important battle.

DMHAS Transfer: Town Hall Meetings

The DMHAS transfer from the Department of Human Services to the Department of Health officially took  effect last Monday, August 28th. The transition will take place gradually and is  expected to be completed by the end of October.

The DOH and DMHAS have announced a schedule of stakeholder town-hall meetings to be conducted across NJ. These meetings present some of our first opportunities to provide comments and seek more information about the transfer. We urge you to learn more about this transfer and register to attend one of these meetings. This transfer introduces increased market insecurity and potentially jeopardizes services in NJ. We need to collectively show our concerns and work together towards a secure transition.

Join Us for Hill Day 2017

On October 2 - 3, join the  National Association of Social Workers  and the  National Council for Behavioral Health  for Hill Day 2017 in Washington, D.C.  

 

Hill Day is an opportunity for hundreds of behavioral health providers, consumers, family members, board members, administrators and community stakeholders to advocate for better resources for mental health and addiction treatment across the country.

 

Registration for Hill Day is free and includes access to policy sessions, workshops and keynote speakers on Monday, October 2. Visits to elected officials on Capitol Hill will take place on Tuesday, October 3.

With 20 national partners, Hill Day is the largest behavioral health advocacy event of the year.
