SEPTEMBER NEWSLETTER
2017

School is in full swing and Fall is around the corner....it must be September! Welcome back! As we prepare for sweater weather and pumpkin spice lattes, don't forget to prepare for flu season too. This issue features an article about the updated flu recommendations from the  American Academy of Pediatrics.

At the federal level, CHIP (Child Health Insurance Program - known as HUSKY B in CT) is in jeopardy of losing funding at the end of September . If it does, as many as 17,000 children in CT could lose healthcare coverage. In addition, the future of DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals) is uncertain. A study (below) has shown that DACA has a positive impact on children's' mental health. If it is eliminated there will be devastating consequences for nearly 800,000 young people in the US.

Some Connecticut cities have been in the news recently. New Britain is starting to shift to become a trauma-informed city. Read about what they are doing below. A new study finds that in Connecticut alternative schools, students in poverty have high levels of school absence. Check out the article below!

CASBHC has been busy all spring and summer advocating for you at the State and Federal Level. There are many issues before us that could negatively impact youth and SBHCs -- but we can't do it alone. Together we have strength in numbers and we need your support. Consider becoming an individual or affiliate member of CASBHC. With your support we can continue to stand up and defend SBHCs as well as the health and well being of our youth. Will you stand up with us?
