Mountain View District E-Newsletter     September 14 , 2017

 Dear Friends,

As I write this, it is Thursday, September 14th. When I woke up this morning, I realized that 3 years ago today was my installation as your Superintendent. I am grateful for those of you who were able to be present for that very special occasion in my life.

That day I told the story about apple picking which illustrated that we are ALL called to tell the Good News of Jesus Christ. I ended my sermon by saying that it's ALWAYS apple-picking season on the Mountain View District!

May this be our reminder that there are those inside and outside the church who are living and dying without Jesus, missing out on the transformation that He alone can affect in their lives. I've said many times that it is the pastor's job to share the love of Jesus and the difference He desires to make in our lives, but it is not ONLY the pastor's job. It's everybody's job to pick the apples. What are WE doing about it?

 With You in the Orchard,
 Nancy

Shoe Boxes for Red Bird Mission

The Endwell United Methodist Church mission team is again coordinating the collection and delivery of shoeboxes for Red Bird Mission, located in Beverly, Kentucky.  The Red Bird Missionary Conference is one of three missionary United Methodist conferences in the United States.  It is the most comprehensive mission effort of the United Methodist Church, providing outreach and services that minister to the whole person (spiritual, physical, social and economic).

Last year our team drove two-26 foot trucks to the Red Bird Mission.  Because of your generosity, one truck was filled with over 3,000 shoeboxes and the other with clothes, books, school and cleaning supplies. We have begun to collect shoeboxes with the goal of having everything ready by November 22, 2017.  We plan on transporting all items the first week of December.

This year we are asking churches that want to participate in this project to help us by dropping off all filled shoeboxes to the following two locations:
Upper New York Conference Center
7481 Henry Clay Blvd.
Liverpool, NY

Endwell United Methodist Church
3301 Watson Blvd.
Endwell, NY

Drop off dates will be November 1st-17th.  If needed, arrangements can be made to have a pickup of items by contacting Dave Alexander at

607-743-8955 or by email to [email protected]
Payroll alert related to Paid Family Leave Act
Upper New York Conference-August 10, 2017

The Upper New York Annual Conference has been asked to provide guidance to local churches related to New York State's Paid Family Leave Act (PFL) which goes into effect January 1, 2018.

Initially, we are delaying all procedural guidance until we ascertain the taxability of this payment and benefit. This information has not been released. As well, our insurance program is unique in its structure so we want to explore all of the possibilities before we assume that this insurance will be paid via payroll deduction. No premium payments are due until 2018.

HOWEVER, in the meantime, we have learned that Paychex has automatically begun deducting premiums from clients' payrolls as an employee contribution to the premium.

We encourage all churches to check immediately with their payroll company to ensure that deductions for Paid Family Leaveinsurance ARE NOT MADE at this time. If your church utilizes Paychex, or if you find that your payroll company has made
deductions, we urge you to contact them immediately to correct your payroll.
