Playing with Perspectives:
Reframing and Seeing Other Sides
Is the glass half full, or half empty? Experience tells us there are many ways of looking at the same issue and it is easy to get stuck on one point of view or frame of reference, especially in conflict.
One of the essential jobs of mediators and those helping to resolve conflict is to create the possibility of a change in perspective. This can entail interventions from reframing toxic, judgmental, and demeaning language, to helping a person see someone else's point of view.
Betsy Zeger and Cordell Wesselink, co-creators of Community Boards Conflict Coaching model, will use tools and techniques from Conflict Coaching to:
- Explore different perspectives
- Play with ways to reframe language to effectively bring opposing sides together
- Share techniques that can be used to help people begin to see new ways of looking at a situation, conflict, and others
This workshop is a perfect skill boost for mediators and also gives a small taste of the Community Boards Conflict Coaching model for those who might be interested in learning more or deepening their current knowledge of it.
