Senior named National Merit semifinalist
Congratulations to senior Kaleb Dunn, who has been selected as a semifinalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program. He is one of approximately 16,000 semifinalists across the country - representing less than 1 percent of U.S. high school seniors -- and the only one at Providence. After submitting a scholarship application, he will be eligible for selection to advance as a finalist and also as a National Merit Scholarship winner.

Kaleb achieved the designation as a semifinalist based on his score on the PSAT he took in the fall of his junior year. Advancing to become National Merit finalist is dependent in part on achieving an equally high SAT score, and with a 1550 out of 1600, he seems to have done that. He said he was happy to hear he had been named a semifinalist, which will go far on college applications, especially those with more stringent entrance standards.

"It gives me more options," he said.

So far, Kaleb has applied to the University of Louisville and been accepted. He is working on his application to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology for early admittance. MIT is now his first choice, he said. He plans to major in engineering.

Kaleb said that when he took the test last fall he was aware that his sophomore year score put him in the top percentile, but becoming a semifinalist wasn't his goal, as such. Instead, he focused on doing his best. Standardized tests come naturally to him because he is "good at reading the questions and figuring out what they're asking as opposed to knowing the answer," he said.
ASAP Dinner to feature Fr. Eric Augenstein
Families considering a Providence education and wrestling with the challenge of fitting tuition into a budget can take hope that each year the generosity of alumni, parents, friends, and area businesses is harnessed in our Annual Student Assistance Program (ASAP), providing help to more than 40 percent of our students whose families apply for financial aid.

The ASAP dinner launches this effort and provides a complimentary meal as an expression of gratitude for the support we receive. This year's event is on Tuesday, Oct. 17, at 6:30 p.m. at Huber's Orchard and Winery's Plantation Hall.

Our guest speaker is a familiar face to many in the New Albany Deanery. Father Eric Augenstein is the vocations director for the Archdiocese of Indianapolis and the sacramental minister of St. Agnes Catholic Church in Nashville, Ind. Previously, he served as pastor of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in New Albany from 2007 to 2013 and as chaplain at Providence from 2011 to 2013. Father Eric will offer his insights on the inspirational tradition of Catholic education in Indiana and its value in our world today.

The program will also feature a student ensemble performing songs from the musical Godspell, which the Musical Theater Production class will perform on campus in November.

To make a reservation for the dinner, contact the Advancement Office at 812-945-3350 or advancement@providencehigh.net.
Students hold drive for baby items for mission trip
The House of Loyalty is sponsoring a drive for baby clothes and other items to be donated to Orphan's Heart, a nonprofit agency that serves orphans and children in impoverished countries around the world, including Guatemala. Seniors Natalie Gallegos and Katie Baker requested the donation drive because they are going on an Orphan's Heart-sponsored mission trip to San Juan, Guatemala, over fall break.

Students, faculty and staff can donate any of the items on the attached list, which includes the most needed items, such as diapers, baby wipes and baby formula. Boxes labeled for each House will be in the student entrance hallway, and Houses can earn points for the number of items donated. The donation drive runs through Sept. 22.

This is the second mission trip to Guatemala with Orphan's Heart for the two girls, who went last year over fall break. More information will follow in the Oct. 25 eVision.

Eighth graders travel to nation's capital

This week, the eighth grade class is enjoying the sights of Washington, D.C. The students will visit various landmarks, including the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at Arlington Cemetery, the White House, several museums, and much more.

Eighth grader Dallas Bonnet sent an email with a reflection on her experience in the first half of the trip:

"The D.C. trip so far has been amazing to see. I never realized how much thought and detail go into the memorials to honor those who have fallen. We went to the Library of Congress yesterday, and its architecture was beautiful. We also went to the Capitol Building and saw U.S. Rep. Trey Hollingsworth and where Congress and the Senate meet. We went to Ford's Theatre, where President Abe Lincoln was killed. We saw the gun that killed him and one of the pillows that was under Lincoln's head when he died. There was still stained blood on it. We got to see the presidential box of the theatre and the stage. It has been amazing so far, and I can't wait to go to the museums to learn more."

PHS collects more than $4,000 for Texas Relief
Thank you to everyone who donated to the Disaster Relief for Texas Spirit Day earlier this month. It truly was a community effort that involved our students, families, faculty, and staff. The total collected was $4,253.48, which is 10 times the normal collection for a typical Spirit Wear Day.

The funds were donated to Catholic Charities USA, which has been helping with short-term disaster relief in the Houston area and will continue to help long term throughout Texas.

PIONEER SPORTS NEWS
Coach Purichia gets 500th career win
It was just three years ago that Coach Terri (Blunk) Purichia '90 earned the milestone of 400 career wins. Late last month, she brought that total up to 500 with the team's win over 4A Hamilton Southeastern in the Lawrence North Invitational. For Coach Purichia, the number snuck up on her - like her players did with the water bottle bath they gave her in the locker room after the victory. For her, coaching isn't so much about counting the wins as enjoying the time with her players. Read more.

Wilkinson and Borden play in national tournament games
Junior Joe Wilkinson and senior Timmy Borden each competed in Perfect Game baseball tournaments over the weekend. Timmy competed with his travel team, Team Elite, based in Georgia. His team won the 2017 WWBA Southeast Qualifier at Perfect Game Park at LakePoint in Cartersville, Ga., which qualifies the team for entry in the WWBA World Championship in Jupiter, Fla., Oct. 19-23. Timmy said he likes playing on the competitive team because it means playing against good competition for good coaches and in front of recruiters. He has verbally committed to the University of Louisville but will enter into the MLB draft in the spring, and if he gets picked in an early round, he may play professionally instead.

Joe was invited to join the SACSN Nation team based in Miami, Fla, for last weekend's Perfect Game Fall National Championship in Phoenix, Ariz., at the spring training complex for the Dodgers. The team lost in the championship round to place second out of 36 teams. Joe will compete again in October in a tournament in Fort Meyers, Fla., with his travel team, Team Ironmen.
Thank you for a successful Deanery Night

Football, faith inspire alumni's book
Justin Campbell '01 learned a lot playing football, as a running back at Providence and at Butler University, and later as a coach of the Southern Indiana Catholic junior high team. He also has learned a lot by trusting in God and being open to where He leads. He has put both elements into a book, The New, Complete You: Life Between The Lines, a book on faith that uses football as a metaphor.

Campbell will be on campus to share the message of his book on two upcoming occasions. Next Friday, he will sign copies of his book under the tent next to the Pioneer Athletic Center during Alumni Night. On Sept. 29, he will be the guest speaker in the morning before the Guerin Day competition. Read more.

LET US PRAY

Pope Benedict XI's Prayer at Ground Zero - Excerpt

God of peace, bring your peace to our violent world:
peace in the hearts of all men and women
and peace among the nations of the earth.
Turn to your way of love
those whose hearts and minds
are consumed with hatred.
God of understanding,
overwhelmed by the magnitude of this tragedy,
we seek your light and guidance
as we confront such terrible events.
Grant that those whose lives were spared
may live so that the lives lost here
may not have been lost in vain.

Comfort and console us,
strengthen us in hope,
and give us the wisdom and courage
to work tirelessly for a world
where true peace and love reign
among nations and in the hearts of all.
