Campus Fire Safety Month

Many students in the West and Northwest are currently coping with large wildfires that affect their daily routines. These tragedies serve as an important reminder that September is Campus Fire Safety Month, a nationwide effort that began in 2005 to raise awareness and educate students about campus-related housing fires.

When students come to campus for the first time, many have not received any fire safety education since elementary school. Research has shown that August and September are the worst times of year for fatal campus fires to take place. Since January 2000, there have been 172 student fatalities due to fires. Eighty-six percent of these fatalities occurred off-campus according to research compiled by Campus Firewatch.

Campus Firewatch announced a partnership with First Alert to support communities doing Town/Gown Fire Safety Community Service Projects. The goal of these projects is to encourage college students to work alongside fire fighters in their local community doing home safety visits and installing smoke alarms donated by First Alert. If your college is interested in starting a Town/Gown Fire Safety Community Project, you can find the resources you need in one place.

The Michael H. Minger Foundation, which promotes campus fire and life safety, created the documentary 9 Fires that explores the impact of nine campus-related fires that happened within three weeks in January and February 2012. The film includes interviews with students, fire and campus officials, victims, and families. The documentary is available for free download to colleges, universities, and communities for use in their fire safety programs. In addition, the Foundation also prepared fire safety resources for RAs. These include a series of posters, videos, and an RA Guide to Teaching Fire Safety (PDF).

Join us next  Tuesday, September 19, 2017 at 2 PM ET  for the next webinar in our  Campus Public Safety Online  series,  Building and Assessing Your Physical Security Program .

Dan Pascale, managing director of Margolis Healy, will discuss building a comprehensive physical security program and assessing current capabilities beyond the use of cameras and electronic access control systems. This includes using crime prevention through environmental design (CPTED) practices to identify appropriate territorial reinforcement, campus lighting needs and deficiencies, use of way-finding signage, and community engagement. Dan will explore the interrelationships amongst people, policy, and technology, and how each of these plays an equally important role in creating safer campuses.

This information can be used to compare your current state of security against best and promising practices, and to identify gaps and opportunities to make reasonable enhancements. Dan will also discuss the importance of sustainability, changes in technology, and the need to replace equipment at the end of its life.  Register now to reserve your seat!

ED Calls for Changes to Title IX Enforcement

On September 7, 2017, U.S. Department of Education (ED) Secretary Betsy DeVos announced the Title IX system "established by the prior administration has failed too many students" and that the "current approach isn't working."

DeVos stated that ED and the Office for Civil Rights (OCR) will launch a "transparent notice-and-comment process to incorporate the insights of all parties in developing a better way." She also noted that the "era of 'rule by letter' is over."

You may read Secretary DeVos' full remarks online. We will provide information on when the notice-and-comment process is available as well as any additional guidance provided by ED as soon as it is released.
