message from the CEO

A New Chief Executive Officer for Eden Health District

Hello Eden Health District Communities!

I'm honored and excited to be on board as CEO for Eden Township Healthcare District (DBA Eden Health District).   And proud to be given charge of carrying on the business and legacy of such a vital organization.

The Eden Health District was established in 1948 to build and operate Eden Hospital, a community hospital to serve residents of Castro Valley, San Leandro, San Lorenzo, Hayward and nearby communities. The District operated Eden until 1998, when Eden Medical Center became an affiliate of Sutter Health.

Today Eden Medical Center - Sutter Health stands near where the original Eden Hospital once stood. It is a testament to the foresight, dedication and perseverance of a group of local citizens - "The Eden Township Healthcare District" in providing healthcare for its community.

Today the District continues to commit resources to "improving the health" of those living within our communities. EHD is not looking to replicate healthcare services - but, partner and support local healthcare agencies.  One focus of the District is to oversee the endowment fund known as the Community Health Fund. Through responsible investments the fund uses its earnings to provide grants to local non-profit organizations, enabling them to provide much-needed health care services to those in need.

During my time at St. Rose Hospital one of my proudest accomplishments as CEO was the development of an inclusive process to insure that the hospital's strategic plans were focused on meeting community needs. Now I look forward to continuing the mission of the Eden Health District to improve the health of the people in our community by investing resources in health and wellness programs that meet identified goals.

One final note. I would be remiss in not thanking the former CEO of Eden Health District, Dev Mahadevan for his past nine years of service in bringing this organization to the point it is today. Through his focus on community needs and his understanding of the ever changing health care climate in our country, he has managed to keep EHD on the right track and looking forward to the future health and well being of all in our communities. Thank you, Dev!

Eden Health District's
"Person of the Year Award" 2017
award-banner.gif
Eden Health District's mission is to invest in and promote the health of the community.  Now, we want to honor other members of our community living within Castro Valley, Hayward, San Leandro, San Lorenzo, and Ashland/Cherryland areas, who make significant contributions improving the health of people who reside within the District's boundaries.

Approximately 360,000 people live within EHD boundaries. Many of these citizens are "unsung heros" who go above and beyond helping others in our community with health-related issues. The EHD Person of the Year Award is open to anyone serving Eden Health District's residents.

Do you know someone who reaches out to help people with chronic conditions like diabetes, heart disease, or cancer...or someone who organizes services that promote the health of the community, such as community health clinics or community health education?

Applications close November 1, 2017

Winner will be awarded December 2017

EHD provides community grants to organizations that support health and wellness efforts to reduce illness and keep people out of hospitals and emergency departments. ABOUT - the Stanford WELL for Life Program
Eden Health District Board of Directors recently approved working in conjunction with the Stanford WELL for Life Program to get members of our local community signed up.  WELL for Life is recruiting 10,000 participant cohorts in each of four locations--WELL Bay Area, WELL China, WELL Taiwan, and WELL Singapore-to answer questions about the many different factors that impact health, wellness, and well-being.

WELL for Life investigators are part of the Stanford School of Medicine, in the Stanford Prevention Research Center (SPRC). SPRC has been at the forefront of wellness and health promotion for the last half-century.  WELL investigators
have been instrumental in setting national and international standards for community-based interventions aimed at improving diet, reducing smoking, increasing physical activity, and reducing the risks of cancer and cardiovascular disease. With WELL for Life, these health promotion experts are using their knowledge to help people learn how to optimize their own health, wellness, and well-being, while furthering the science of health and wellness promotion.  Eden Health District hosted  Stanford Well for Life program representatives  at its table.

Two Upcoming EHD Community Education Workshops
RUN TO THE DAM...OFFERS NEW VISTAS TO RUNNERS

Participants in the Castro Valley Sports Foundation's inaugural "Run to the Dam" will see parts of Lake Chabot Regional Park that previously have not been open to the public without permits.  The trail from the Chabot staging area to the upper San Leandro Reservoir and back covers mostly flat terrain and previously has been open only with proper permits, so runners and walkers will be treated to new views in the scenic park.

Co-sponsored by the Eden Health District, the 5K and 10K event, is scheduled for Sunday, Oct. 29, beginning at 8:30 a.m. from the Chabot staging area, 7000 Miller Road.  Packet pickup and race day registration begins at 7:30 a.m.

To register for the Run to the Dam, go to the CVSF website: castrovalleysportsfoundation.org   (Click on the "Events" link and follow instructions).  Entry fee is $35 for the 5K and $45 for the 10K from now through Oct. 13, increasing to $45 and $50 thereafter.  Prizes will be offered by age divisions, which start at 8-years-old and under and go all the way to 85-years-old and over.

Proceeds from the Run to the Dam benefit CVSF, a local non-profit that provides charitable assistance to youth sports and athletics in the community, including teams and programs under the auspices of the Castro Valley Unified School District.

Eden Health District and CVSF also are seeking sponsors and volunteers for the Oct. 29 run.  Sponsorship and volunteer forms are available on the CVSF website: castrovalleysportsfoundation.org  (Simply click on the "Events" link and follow instructions).
