Remembering Christiane Knorr
We are sad to share the news with you that Christiane Knorr, Gallery founder, co-owner and potter, passed away August 31. Christiane was a bright star in our Gallery pantheon, always sharing a broad smile and enthusiasm for quality contemporary art with Gallery customers. Along with evaluating prospective artist submissions at the gallery, she traveled to wholesale shows annually to seek out new work. She helped set the standard of quality for the type of work the Gallery has been known for over the years. Our many staff members and artists over the years have loved working with her.
Christiane was a native of Germany and originally trained as a physical therapist. After moving to the US with her children and husband Georg, the Knorr family eventually landed in Iowa City, where Georg was a member of the University of Iowa Physics Department. Christiane took up pottery in the late 1970s, later studying with Ray Mullen at Kirkwood Community College. Her pottery was much in demand by customers. A new shipment always occupied four shelves and was soon sold. She retired from pottery in recent years, but continued to be involved in Gallery affairs. In that time, she often traveled to be with her sons and their families on the West Coast. She was an avid supporter and participant in the classical music scene and enjoyed forays into the woods and to natural areas nationally.
Christiane lives on in the many pieces of pottery found in daily use across the community and beyond. We will cherish them. For more information about Christiane, please read this.
