Dear Friends and Neighbors:

September 12, 2017 Update:

RESIDENTS IN IMPACTED AREAS ARE ASKED TO PLEASE CONTINUE LIMITING USE OF WASTEWATER UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.

The city of Houston is working to try to restore the Turkey Creek and West District wastewater treatment plants as quickly as possible.

What all has the city done?:

  • the city hired a contractor to lay approximately four miles of 12" sewer pipe as a temporary workaround, which became operational last Friday and gives the systems 600,000 extra gallons of capacity.
  • the city has four portable wastewater treatment tanks at Piping Rock, Rincon Drive, Gentryside Drive, and Briar Patch Drive to directly pump wastewater from the impacted neighborhoods into tanks for transportation to other wastewater treatment plants.
  • the city is sending pumping trucks to those areas that have reported sanitary sewer overflows to 311, are pumping out individual manholes and transporting sanitary sewer material to other WWTPs for processing.
  • Both the Turkey Creek and West District WWTPs are now back online, although they are still not operating at full capacity.
  • Turkey Creek WWTP is running off generator power.  City crews were on hand earlier today trying to assist CenterPoint in restoring power to the plant.
Despite all these efforts, neither plant is running at full capacity, and the city continues to ask both residents and businesses in the impacted areas to please help limit wastewater discharges to avoid sanitary sewer backups.  A few ways to help limit wastewater include minimizing laundry use, taking shorter showers, not running the dishwasher, and flushing the toilet a little less.

Houston water is safe to drink.    The City of Houston's drinking water remains SAFE; this includes the tap water that comes out of the faucet.

Residents in the purple or beige shaded impacted areas shown below are asked to please help the city by limiting their use of  water for showers, baths, laundry, dishes or toilets until further notice .  This includes portions of District G in the following zip codes: 77077, 77079, 77024 and a small portion of 77042.

This is a request to LIMIT use of Wastewater.  It is NOT an order.  If you have been mucking out your house all day, we understand you may need to take a quick shower. We understand your need to flush the toilet.
