Mishkan HaLev: Prayers for S'lichot and the Month of Elul

This year we will use the brand new prayer book,
Mishkan HaLev, for the first time.

Mishkan HaLev serves as a companion to Mishkan HaNefesh,
the Reform Movement's High Holy Day prayer book,
which we have been using for the last two years.
Mishkan HaLev offers two complete services:
one for Selichot, the Saturday night service before Rosh HaShanah,
and one to be used each Friday night during the month of Elul.
For the next three Friday nights we will use Mishkan HaLev
and its beautiful readings, poetry, meditations, commentary,
and translations  to ready our hearts and minds
to enter the High Holy Days.

Bring your Shofarot -
we will have the opportunity to be
awakened by the blast of the shofar
at the end of each service.

Mishkan HaLev is a special gift
from the
Temple Habonim Endowment Fund

THIS WEEK

A Meaningful Addition to our
Book of Memory
The Book of Memory is one of our most precious congregational traditions. It will be distributed at our Yom Kippur Yizkor Service on Saturday, September 30th, and serves as an acknowledgement that those who came before us taught us, loved, us, inspired us,
and have not been forgotten.

New this year, you have the opportunity to include several sentences (up to 72 words) about each person you are remembering and share some of your fondest memories of them.

In order to keep the Book of Memory current, it is necessary for you to resubmit these names annually. You can submit your list a few different ways: 1) complete the order form in the September Bulletin and send it in to the Temple office, 2) download the form on the Temple website and send in to the Temple office, or 3)  click here to submit your names using the online form. If there are no changes to last year's list, please indicate this on the form. Just click on the flyer on the home page of the website and you will be redirected to the Giving/Book of Memory page.

Please submit your names by Friday, September 15th.A recommended donation of $18 for each name is requested. You can mail in your contribution or pay via paypal through the same giving page on the website.

If you have any questions, please call Jodi in the Temple office
at 401-245-6536.

TapIn is organizing a distribution of backpacks and school supplies for children of their clients. Back to school times are always difficult for persons in need because they have to stretch their limited budgets to buy school supplies for their children.

TapIn was just recently able to purchase 100 backpacks, but needs the supplies to fill them up. TapIn would not be able to do what they do without the ongoing support of Barrington's faith community and they are reaching out to all of the congregations in town to join in this activity.

Temple Habonim will be accepting donations of new school supplies through Friday, August 11th - just drop them in the donation bin in the lobby during regular office hours (call ahead to make sure someone is here) or when you are here for services.
Ever thought about hosting an exchange student?

Ronnie Newman, longtime Temple Habonim member, is the eternal optimist. She refuses to throw in the towel in her attempt to find a few families who live in Barrington or Southeastern Mass. who are  members of the Temple and will step up to the plate and add a wonderful foreign exchange student to their family for a few weeks as a Welcome Family or even for 5-10 months as a permanent host family.

There are still students available from Thailand, Germany, Turkey, Italy and Spain who are waiting anxiously in their home countries to be placed here beginning in mid-August. They are all good students of high school age and interested in participating in a variety of sports, theater, dance, and/or musical groups.

These students are coming here through two different organizations based in Portland, Maine - CIEE and PanAtlantic Foundation for which Ronnie is the Local Coordinator/Area Representative.

If you are interested in knowing more about becoming a Welcome Family or long-term host family PLEASE CALL RONNIE TODAY (or tomorrow) at 401-247-1751 or 401-486-2824.
