Demo at BHS!

BHS Awning Removed

One of the goals for the referendum Phase II: Revitalize Baraboo High School is to add more space to common areas and highly used areas at BHS.

On Tuesday, Aug. 8 we reached a milestone by removing the front awning that used to stand in front of the high school. A demolition team with CG Schmidt worked in sync to tear down the awning, which will provide space for an expanded large commons area to be completed by September 2018.

In addition to removing the awning, this summer the construction team has began construction on the Student Services department, a remodel of the locker rooms, began installing a sprinkler system throughout the building and has completed structural work.

To the left is a timeline that shows what changes will continue throughout the 2017-18 school year, including new updates to the Tech Ed department, Art department, the installation of a new Fitness Classroom, a larger Commons Area, a new Heating and Cooling system, a new English department and a beautiful new library and media center.

Boll Goes to Yale
BHS Social Studies teacher  Jake  Boll took part in a wonderful learning opportunity at Yale University for a week in July to learn about Colonial History.

The seminar was sponsored by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History and taught by renowned Yale University Professor John Demos, an expert in early American History.

Some of the highlights of the seminar included field trips to colonial homes in Connecticut and Massachusetts, studying 300+ year old primary source documents, and collaborating on lesson plans with history teachers and National Park Rangers from around the nation.

Mr. Boll looks forward to applying what he learned with his students right away this September!

Schultz Ready to take Curriculum Outside
Outdoor adventure and classroom curriculum intersect at the American Wilderness Leadership
School (AWLS).

Led by Safari Club International Foundation (SCIF), AWLS teaches educators like BHS Ag teacher Jenna Schultz how to use the outdoors as a classroom and incorporate ecological lessons into all aspects of curriculum.

During the eight-day workshop held just south of Jackson, Wyoming, Schultz learned  about the science of conservation and the positive role hunting plays in it. Participants shot  firearms, studied stream ecology, got involved in class discussions, went on conservation hikes,  and learned outdoor and survival skills. They networked with their fellow educators from  throughout the country.

The week was packed with outdoor opportunities that can easily be incorporated into current  classroom curriculums. Everything in nature is interconnected; now for the educators, so are  the state standards and lessons about conservation in subjects like math, science, physical  education, language arts, social studies and art.

Schultz also became certified as an instructor in the National Archery in the Schools  Program.

AWLS is presented by Safari Club International Foundation, that funds and manages worldwide
programs dedicated to wildlife conservation, outdoors education and humanitarian services.
Workshops are sponsored by SCI Foundation, SCI Sables, SCI chapters, Hunter Legacy Fund, and corporate sponsors.

Roth Attends American Indian Summer Studies Program
From July 31 to August 4, Jack Young Middle School teacher Sarah Roth attended the 21st Annual American Indian Studies Summer Institute. This conference, hosted by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, was held to teach participants about the histories and current topics of Wisconsin tribal nations. Educators, administrators, and employees of various nations in Wisconsin were in attendance.

This year, the conference was held in Crandon, Wisconsin. In addition to hearing from various guest speakers, participants also toured the Sokaogon Chippewa and Forest County Potawatomi communities and heard from these nations' elders and members.

Sarah Roth Incorporates Ho-Chunk  language into her 6th Grade Intro to World Languages Course. Attending this conference has given Roth many new ideas for topics, histories, and perspectives to include in this unit. In addition, Roth plans to share information learned from this conference with other staff in the Baraboo School District.

Safety For All - Back-to-School Thoughts on Supporting LGBTQ+ Teens

While it might be hard to admit, summer is on its way out and the beginning of the school year is getting closer and closer. What's on your mind as a parent, teacher, or student when you think about heading back to school? Are you dreading having to get up early, do homework, or grade assignments? Or maybe you're nervous about supporting a child who struggles in school, balancing academic requirements in the classroom with diverse student needs, or navigating complicated friend relationships.

Whatever it may be, it's important to remember that in addition to all of these challenges, students who are perceived to be different from their peers, or who belong to groups who have historically been discriminated against, face other risks and difficulties when coming back to school. This includes kids and teens who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, or who are questioning their sexual identity. Students who are transgender - meaning they identify as a gender other than the one they were assigned when they were born - and students who express their gender in unconventional ways are especially vulnerable in school settings.

What does this look like? We know that LGBTQ+ students are at a higher risk of physical violence in school settings, but even when this isn't the case, these young people often face substantial verbal harassment from peers. This can be as blatant as being the target of slurs, or as subtle as hearing classmates regularly say "no homo" as a joke or loudly stating "there's only two genders." Even when teachers and other staff make efforts to intervene, a lot of this harassment flies under the radar. And students who are relatively protected from this behavior can still feel isolated when the stories, examples, and language they hear in classrooms don't reflect their experience (for example, only seeing heterosexual relationships in the readings that are assigned, or having a teacher say "boys and girls" when a student doesn't identify with either).

So what can we do to make sure  all  students feel safe, accepted, and valued at school? Intervening in problematic behavior is a great place to start. Even when students use homophobic or transphobic language as a joke (for example, saying "that's so gay" about a game or a piece of clothing), it has an impact on young people to hear their identities - or those of their friends and family members - consistently associated with something negative. It can also make a big difference to actively include examples of LGBTQ+ identities and contributions in curricula and classroom materials. Even subtle shifts, like not making assumptions about the gender of someone a young person is dating, can signal safety and support for young people who might feel isolated on the basis of their gender or sexual identity. Parents and caregivers can make sure to talk to their kids about valuing diversity and treating others with respect, and kids and teens can tell their friends that they appreciate all the identities that make them who they are.

In a time when harassment and hate speech have been on the rise, it's important to remember that we all have a role in creating schools and communities where kids of all identities can learn, connect with each other, and gain the skills and experience they need to grow up safe, happy, healthy, and prepared to make a difference.
