A Message from Your Pastor
Grace to you, and peace from God our Father and Jesus the Lord of Life!

Well, it happened.  I knew it was coming some day soon, but I didn't imagine it would be this early.  Today I have lost something, and gained something, and my life will never be quite the same...
So, I was walking from my office to the kitchen to get a pitcher of water.  On the way I passed our new class of preschoolers while they were waiting for the bathroom.   Chapel time doesn't start until next week, so the only place these kids have met me was at the preschool open house, where I greeted people while holding my son Samuel.  As I walked by the teachers greeted me with "Hi Pastor Grant!" which then caused the kids to look at me, trying to figure out if they knew me, too.  Suddenly the light bulb lit up on one, and then two, and then many faces as they said "Hi, Baby-guy!"
The handle that they had for me had little to do with me, and everything to do with my son.  I wasn't "pastor" or "Grant" just the guy who was holding that baby.  As Sam grows, this will happen more and more.  My identity as "Sam's dad" will often define me, with his friends and teachers as Samuel moves through this life.  As my life goes on, I will be shaped by my new identity in ways I can anticipate, and ways I can't.  In the short time that I have already been living into it, I've discovered gifts, and compassion that I didn't know I had, along with the knowledge that I am growing even as I hold him and watch him grow.  As "Sam's dad" I've gained a new identity that mixes with and transforms everything else that I am.
In its own little way, my experience of new identity reflec ts the identity we  all receive as Christians.  In baptism we are given the identity of "Child of God" - an identity that has little to do with us, and everything to do with the God who continues to love and claim us.  Sure, there is more to us than this designation, but of all the things people call us, this one is the one that will last.  And as we live into it, it will continue to shape and transform us in ways we can anticipate, and ways we can't.  We will find gifts and compassion we didn't know we had.  We will find comfort, confidence and love that meet us where we are and draw out the beautiful, caring person that we were made to be.  We will find ourselves transformed again and again as this identity mixes with and transforms everything else we are.
This summer we celebrated the baptisms of Mason, Sandra, Aubrey and Tinley.  This month we celebrate the baptisms of Samuel, Bennett and Alexa.  And I encourage you, gentle reader, in the midst of it all to celebrate your baptism as well.  Celebrate the God who comes to us in love.  Celebrate the eternal promise that God has made to you.  Celebrate your identity as "Child of the living God", and let that identity transform how you live out everything else that you are.

Blessings in the ongoing adventure of Faith!
Yours in Christ,
Pastor Grant

Hurricane Harvey Relief
Dear friends,
Hurricane Harvey, one of the most powerful storms to hit the United States in years, threatening millions of our neighbors in Texas and Louisiana with heavy rain, wind and rising tides.
The National Hurricane Center called the storm's effects "life-threatening, devastating and catastrophic" and predicted long periods of rain and flooding, along with massive power outages. While many have evacuated, significant damage is the aftermath, and thousands of people may be housed in shelters for extended periods of time.

We have an opportunity to accompany our neighbors during and after this disaster, in Jesus Christ's name.
