Chamber New s
A Message from our President

September is here and for many this means back to school, back to routine, and back to work. It's a busy time at the Chamber office as we prepare for a full slate of fall events and initiatives.

The 23rd Annual Malcolm Baldrige Community Awards Dinner is almost upon us, and we are excited to be recognizing our three outstanding honorees at this premier business event on September 26th. The Chamber is privileged to be able to present this evening in the name of former Chamber chairman Malcolm 'Mac' Baldrige, a dynamic businessman, outstanding community leader and United States Secretary of Commerce under president Ronald Regan. It will be a special evening as we honor Frank Monteiro of MacDermid Performance Solutions with the Malcolm Baldrige Community Award, Lori DosSantos of Bank of America Merrill Lynch with the Leadership Award, and James Higgins of Webster Bank with the Volunteer Award.

This year, we are offering a special opportunity to extend your congratulations to our awardees as well as showcase your business to over 400 attendees. I invite you to add your company logo or your name to our 'Congratulations Card,' which will be presented to everyone at the awards evening and in a unique presentation to Frank, Lori and James. The event is quickly approaching so please contact us on how you can be added to this card today!

Although this awards dinner is the Chamber's largest undertaking this month, it is by no means all that we are up to. Please keep scrolling to see all of the upcoming opportunities ahead and the ways that our staff has been working to support your business.

As always, I encourage you to reach out to me if  if I can be of assistance at (203) 757-0701 or  [email protected]

Best Regards,

Hiring and Training Programs Available
Do you need help finding qualified workers for your business? Could you use some financial assistance to offset the cost of hiring and training new workers, or training your existing workforce? The Waterbury Regional Chamber is working with the Northwest Regional Workforce Investment Board to help businesses in Greater Waterbury learn more about the available hiring and training programs and whether they qualify for them.  This includes providing information on posting jobs on the state's CTHires.com website, as well as information about Manufacturing Innovation Fund Incumbent Worker Training, the Apprenticeship Program, Hiring Veterans, and On the Job Training programs. For information, contact Dave Krechevsky, the Chamber's director of public policy and economic development, at [email protected] or 203-757-0701.

HR Corner: "An Act Concerning Pregnant Women
in the Workplace"
As of October 1, 2017, in the State of CT, there will be new employment protections for pregnant employees and pregnant applicants under the state's existing anti-discrimination law.

The new "ACT" will make it discriminatory in Connecticut to: Limit, segregate, or classify an employee in a way that would deprive her of employment opportunities because of her pregnancy; as well as discriminating against her because she is pregnant for any work-related functions, including hiring. It will also be discriminatory to make it mandatory for a pregnant employee to be required to do a job that has reduced responsibilities, if she does not believe she needs to reduce her responsibilities.

The Act also provides new, definitions for certain the terms in the act and includes extensive notice requirements that Connecticut employers must adhere to as well.

For more information click on this link  http://wp.me/p8cnZv-zK  to read the longer version of this notice.

If you have any questions about this new "Act", or how to implement or publicize it within your organization, I will be happy to help you navigate through this sea of uncertainty.

And for every overdose, there are many more daily users getting by day-to-day with their addiction. There is no doubt this crisis is having an impact on the workforce and in the workplace. But are employers prepared to recognize the problem, or know where to go for help? Join in the Opiod Forum on September 27th beginning at 7:30 AM.
