St. Brendan the Navigator
Parish Renewal Plan
Vestry/Renewal Team Update:
Dear members of St. Brendan's,
In preparation for developing a Mission Statement and a Values Statement at the parish meeting following worship on Sunday, September 10, the Vestry/Renewal Team proposes the following two models that might serve as
a starting point for crafting a single parish mission statement:
- The Mission of St. Brendan the Navigator Episcopal Church is to love, serve and praise:
- to love one another as Christ loves us,
- to serve the needs of each other and those on the island and beyond,
- to praise God in all things.
2. The Mission of St. Brendan the Navigator Episcopal Church is to love one another as Christ loves us, to support each other on our journey in faith, and to minister to the needs of those on the island and beyond.
Our task at the meeting will be to consider adopting a single Mission Statement that will drive our life and work as a congregation for the next 13 months of the parish renewal period. The Vestry/Renewal Team suggests the following criteria to inform our deliberations at the meeting:
The parish mission statement should be:
- Memorable and
- Memorizable: people need to be able to recall from memory at least the important features of the statement;
- Definitive: the statement should define who we are at St. Brendan's and where we should be headed as God's people;
- Distinctive, recalling what makes us unique as a parish;
- Comprehensive: it speaks in relevant ways to all we try to do and be, especially in this time of transition and renewal;
- Comprehensible, easily understood by all.
- Succinct enough to be useful in all our publications and publicity;
In addition, the Vestry/Renewal Team proposes that we consider adopting a set of values to guide us in how we work together as a parish. Here is a proposed Values Statement to serve as a possible guide for our work at the meeting:
These are our values at St. Brendan the Navigator Episcopal Church.
We will:
- Treat others with respect and compassion;
- Listen to others with trust and appreciation;
- Seek God's goodness in each person;
- Strive for consensus and work collaboratively;
- Join in acts of loving kindness;
- Share our faith joyfully across the generations;
- Learn from our past and look to the future with hope.
At the end of this process, we hope to have a Parish Mission Statement, and a Parish Values Statement that, combined with the already-adopted Parish Renewal Plan, will set our agenda and guide our work and life at St. Brendan's into the new year.
We look forward to engaging together in this exciting and important work on Sunday, September 10, following worship!

NOTICE OF SPECIAL MEETING
Pursuant of Article IV, Section 1, of the Bylaws notice is hereby given by the Vestry that a Special Meeting of the Members of St. Brendan the Navigator shall be held on Sunday, September 10, 2017, at 11:15 a.m. to conduct the following business:
1. Consider the adoption of a Mission Statement and a Values Statement to
accompany the Parish Renewal Plan of St. Brendan the Navigator.

'Finding Joy' Discussion: this Sunday at 9am
The Reverend Dr. Edward Dufresne+ will conduct the final group discussion on
the topic, "Finding Joy" this Sunday, September 10th at 9am.
The main text for discussion is The Book of Joy by the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu, (Avery, New York, 2016). Topics have included: What Is Joy?, Joy and Suffering, Joy Comes with Perspective and Acceptance, Joy in Humility and Humor, The Joy in Forgiveness, Joy and Gratitude, Joy and Generosity, Joy and Compassion, Joy in Being One with the World, and Joy in Being One with God.
The fourth and final session this Sunday will cover pp 277-348 -
'Being One with the World' and pp171-190 - Joy in 'Being One with the Sacred.'

EQUAL MEANS EQUAL: September 14, 6:30 pm
Opera House Arts
Equal Rights Maine brings to the Opera House a free showing of
Equal Means Equal, a fast-paced documentary illustrating why women and men need an equal rights amendment now.
When actor, director and political activist Kamala Lopez, who was a child during the campaign for an Equal Rights Amendment in the 1970s, discovered that
her generation of younger women assumed they had equal rights under the law, she set out to shed light on some hard truths. What she produced and directed is a lively, example-rich documentary that shows the many areas
where women are still not protected under the law.
"Join women and men from the Island and surrounding towns who believe that
"Equality of rights under the law shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any state on the account of sex.
"
The film runs 1 hr. 33 min and following the screening, Equal Rights Maine leaders will host a short Q and A.

Remembering M. Janice Place: 1933-2017
Charleston, South Carolina: M. Janice Place, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and loyal friend, died peacefully on September 2nd, 2017, age 84, surrounded by her loving husband and family. Janice is survived by her husband Geoffrey; her children Andrew Place, Nicholas Place (Pamela), and Susan Place Everhart (David), and son-in-law Steven Wilcher; her 7 grandchildren Heather Crucilla (Antony), Alexander Place (Christy), Naomi Everhart, Sara Everhart, Emma Place, Katherine Wilcher, and Aidan Place; and her 4 great-grandchildren Sienna Crucilla, Wesley Place, Cooper Crucilla, and Felicity Place. She was predeceased by her daughter Fiona Wilcher and her brother Cedric Entwistle. Janice was born on May 19th, 1933 in Lancashire, England to Norman and Phyllis Entwistle. Janice attended Bedford Teachers Training College and became a physical education teacher. She met her beloved husband Geoffrey and they married on August 9th, 1955. Together with their 4 children they lived in Newcastle England, Brussels Belgium, and then moved to Cincinnati Ohio in 1968. In retirement, Janice and Geoffrey lived on Hilton Head Island, and then moved to the Bishop Gadsden Retirement Community in Charleston in 2006. Janice was blessed by a life full of love, family, and adventure. She enjoyed nothing more than making memories and building traditions with her children and grandchildren, spending time at the family's summer home and garden in coastal Maine, sailing, kayaking, and planning international travel adventures with Geoffrey.
Services were held Wednesday September 6th at the Chapel at Bishop Gadsden on James Island, SC. Memorial donations may be made to the Bishop Gadsden Charitable Fund at One Bishop Gadsden Way, Charleston, SC 29412

Scripture Notes for The Fourteenth Sunday After Pentecost
We now reach a section of Matthew's Gospel in which Jesus
teaches about God's way of dealing with humanity: namely, forgiveness. Today's reading is
primarily concerned with the Church's role as the agent of forgiveness. Even when a member of
the Church is unrepentant, the Church is not to give up on that
person easily. We are to make
every effort to move the sinner to repent
and accept the forgiveness of God, which Jesus has c
ommissioned the Church
to offer.
In the first reading, the prophet Ezekiel is commissioned to warn the people of
the need to
repent. The central message is that God has no desire to condemn; God's deepest desire is to
forgive.
Today's passage from the Epistle to the Romans continues to deal with the characteristics of
Christian living. We are to live in good relationships with
all people, to respect the laws and
authorities of human society, and above
all to express love by mutual behavior based on God's
law.
We gather as the People of God, having found in our relationship with God that
he is our lover
and our savior, not an angry or condemning judge. We find in
our lives together as Church that
we are not only the recipients of God's love
and forgiveness but also sent into the world as the instruments of that love and forgiveness to all people.

In Our Prayers
We pray for those on our prayer list suffering and recovering from illnesses,
especially Wilma Turner, William, Pat Stoneburner, Tony Stoneburner, Holly, Carolyn Angel, Colin MacNaught, Shannon Cormier, Nancy Stearns, Daniel Harriman, Diane, John, Tom, Claudia, Kathy Gray, Hannah Scaife, Marcia Scott, Bob Harris, Sen. John McCain, Ann Ottesen, Henry 'Hank' Millon, Jennifer Hulsey and her family Byron, Ben, and Clair. We pray, also, for those who love and care for them.
We pray for those struggling with addiction and mental illness.
We pray for all those receiving care through Neighbor Care and for all the residents of the Island Nursing Home, the Northern Bay Residential Facility,
and their families.
We pray for the dying, and those who have died. We remember also those who mourn.
We pray for the victims of gun violence-in our cities and towns, in our schools, in our places of worship, and in our homes.
We pray for the victims of the violence of armed conflicts around the world. We pray for those made refugees by the violence of armed conflicts. We pray for the victims of terrorist attacks everywhere.
We pray for all who suffer the effects of domestic violence and the violence
of bullying in our schools.
We pray for all peacemakers, and all those who work for justice.
We pray for all those serving in the armed forces of our country,
remembering, especially, Craig, Chris, and Graham.
We pray for all who govern, and we pray for the concerns of our local community, remembering, especially, our children, our young people, and
our isolated elderly.
We pray for Justin, Archbishop of Canterbury; Suheil, Bishop of Jerusalem; Michael, our Presiding Bishop; Steve, our Bishop; for the members of our vestry; and for all our members, whose ministries are varied and far-reaching.
In the Diocesan Cycle of Prayer, we pray for
the beginning of the program year.
For students, educators, school administrators and staff, and those dedicated to the ministry of Christian Education and Formation as the school and program years begin.
In the Anglican Cycle of Prayer, we pray for Sheffield - (York, England) and Sheffield - Doncaster - (York, England)
On the Island and Peninsula, we pray for
First Baptist Church, Blue Hill.
