Provost Mason to hold 'office hours' September 15 for campus leadership discussions with faculty, staff
In preparation to begin a search for the next CEO and dean of the Polytechnic Campus following the announcement of Dean Verna Fitzsimmons
' retirement,
Provost April Mason has scheduled a series of monthly information-gathering meetings on campus.
On Sept. 15, Provost Mason is holding "office hours" in three locations on campus with the intention of speaking with any faculty or staff who are able to drop by.
These conversations will be very informal and will serve as faculty and staff members' opportunity to help impact the future leadership of the Polytechnic Campus

Professor Nichols to speak at upcoming cybersecurity event at Wichita State University
Associate professor Randall Nichols is ready to give his audience a wake up call when it comes to impending drone wars.
A professor of UAS cybersecurity at Kansas State Polytechnic, Nichols has been asked to speak at the upcoming Cybersecurity Forum at Wichita State University and will be giving a presentation titled, "Drone Wars: Threats, Vulnerabilities and Hostile Use of Unmanned Aircraft Systems and Small UAS."
During the event, which takes place Oct. 4 at the Hughes Metroplex, Nichols will touch on the UAS and small UAS landscape, including automation, collaboration, conventional vulnerabilities and countermeasures. He will also speak on commercial UAV sophistication, sense and avoid and SCADA systems. Woven into his presentation will be solutions to any risks or problems posed to unmanned aircraft when it comes to cybersecurity.

Faculty, staff and students invited to Safe Zone introductory training
Kansas State Polytechnic deeply values its principles of community, diversity and social awareness, and through a program known as Safe Zone, members of the campus can contribute to these important standards.
The purpose of the Safe Zone program is to create "allies" for oppressed, marginalized and silenced groups on campus. Being an ally is about providing resources, contacts or help to those in need, whether it be for students, staff or faculty.
The Safe Zone program starts with introductory training, which is the first step to becoming a Polytechnic Campus ally. It educates individuals how to be there for someone in need and how to promote positive change in a dominant culture.

Jaffee earns second NAFI Master Instructor accreditation
Senior assistant chief flight instructor and flight team advisor Ben Jaffee is adding to his credentials. He recently earned his second NAFI Master Instructor accreditation.
The NAFI, or National Association of Flight Instructors, Master Instructor accreditation is earned by aviation educators based upon a system of advanced professional standards
and peer review. The accreditation identifies and publicly recognizes those teachers of flight who demonstrate an ongoing commitment to excellence, professional growth and service to the aviation community.
Jaffee grew up in California, taking his first flight in a small airplane on a EAA Young Eagles flight and realized that he wanted to be a pilot. He attended Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, earning a bachelor's degree in aeronautics and his AGI, CFI, CFII and MEI. He also hold's a master's of business administration in aviation and
has more than 4,700 flight hours.
Jaffee joined the aviation faculty at Kansas State Polytechnic in 2016.

Freshmen attend seminar course called Mastering Academic Conversations
 Freshmen on the Polytechnic Campus are getting a boost to their humanities education through a seminar course called
Mastering Academic Conversations.
The course, taught by Dr. Pat Ackerman, Kathy Brockway and Joel Matthews, is a requirement for the freshmen class and meets every Wednesday afternoon in the College Center Conference Room to accommodate the 70 students.
During the semester, the underclassmen will experience art and humanities in Salina, like attending a play, visiting the Smoky Hill Museum and going on the downtown sculpture tour. They will also be asked to create research posters and take part in assignments that focus on critical thinking and reflection.
Dr. Ackerman says the course's motto is to "actively engage students in the process of becoming successful students, scholars and citizens."

Airport management senior presents on summer internship in Taiwan
 Hsin Huang, a senior in the airport management degree option, now has another accomplishment to add to his resume.
Huang
spent the summer in his hometown of Taichung, Taiwan, interning at the local airport as a flight operations coordinator. He presented on his experiences Tuesday in the Technology Center.
Huang, who plans on returning home after graduating, said his internship was focused on four areas: airport emergency planning, airport security, which includes terrorism training, airport wildlife hazards and airport firefighting.

Congratulations to Alyssa Wendel for her rising star award!
Alyssa Wendel has won the Outstanding New Professional Rising Star Award for the state of Kansas from NASPA IV-West, which is the regional association for National Association for Student Affairs Administrators.
The Outstanding New Professionals Rising Star award goes to an individual who has less than five years of professional experience and who has made significant contributions to his or her campus and region, with involvement on committees, new ideas for programs, and a student-centered focus.
Alyssa will be recognized for this accomplishment in November at the annual conference, but I wanted to share the happy news since it was recently announced that she won!

Employee Tuition Assistance and Spouse/Dependent Grant
1. Employee Tuition Assistance
Award amount is for tuition only in a K-State course for up to 3 credit hours per term.
The maximum award amount will not exceed the value of 3 hours at the in-state Manhattan/Salina tuition rate (ie. campus fees, other institutional fees, etc. are the responsibility of the employee).

Spouse/Dependent Grants (Only REGULAR employees are eligible. If you are unsure if you are REGULAR or TERM, check your contract or with the HR office.)
For Dependents or Spouses that are enrolled full time in a degree terminating undergraduate program, the award will be the equivalent of the regular, resident on-campus tuition rate for 7 undergraduate course credits, where full-time for an undergraduate is defined as at least 12 enrolled credit hours per regular fall/spring term.
For Spouses that are enrolled part-time in a degree terminating undergraduate program the maximum award will be the equivalent of the regular, resident on-campus tuition rate for 3 undergraduate course credits, where part-time for an undergraduate is defined as less than 12 enrolled credit hours per regular fall/spring term. (Enrollment of less than 3 credit hours, will result in the proration of the award i.e. 2 credit hours enrolled = the equivalent of the regular, resident on-campus tuition rate for 2 credit hours - or - 1 credit hour enrolled = the equivalent of the regular, resident on-campus tuition rate for 1 credit hour. )
Dependents that are enrolled less than full-time in an undergraduate program are not eligible for the K-State Dependent/Spouse Grant.
For Dependents or Spouses that are enrolled in a degree terminating graduate or veterinary medicine program the maximum award will be the equivalent of the regular, resident on-campus tuition rate for 3 course credit hours as indicated by the student's degree program, graduate or veterinary medicine.
