The Family Ministries program of Saltwater Church aspires to spark children's sense of wonder while lighting the path for families as they navigate the spiritual journey of parenting. We will work to provide a safe and supportive environment that nurtures the spiritual development of each child, fosters connections between our congregation's families, and provides thoughtful and inspirational resources and tools to children, youth, and families.

Melinda
A Message From Melinda Einander,
Director  of Family Ministries
Please read below to find out what is happening in our religious education  classes.
This year our classes for children and youth examine what it means to be a Unitarian Universalist, our seven principles, words and deeds of famous Unitarian Universalists, and the history of our faith tradition.
Intergenerational Worship (all ages)
Today's worship service celebrated our gathering together as a community at the end of summer.

Our service included a  water  communion.  Each person or  family was invited to share  water from their summer travels, or adventures close to home. The  water was poured into a bowl, illustrating how each of us contributes to the creation of our community.

Talk with your child about the idea that each of us has something to contribute to our church community.  Enjoy sharing stories about your summer adventures.

Fall Classes begin September 17
This fall, our children's classes will explore the theme of creation and creativity:  ourselves as creative people, how we work together to create our church home, and creating justice in the world.  It will be a fun, dynamic year and a chance for us to try some new things.  This year our age groups are:
  • ages 3-7 Story Time class
  • ages 7-10 Trail Blazers class
  • ages 10-14 Creativity Club
  • grades 9-12 High School Youth (YRUU)

Nursery care is available for children 0-4.  Please register your child or youth at the table at the main entrance Sunday mornings during the month of September.

Cottage Meetings--Your Input is Important!
The Ministerial Search Team is excitedly working towards attracting a 'just right fit' minister for our congregation.  But first we need to be certain that we understand our congregation:
1)      Who we are (as individuals and collectively)
2)      Where we are going as a congregation
3)      What traits and skills we believe we need in a minister for our congregation to reach its goals
Join members of the Family Ministries team on Monday, September 25, from 6:30-8 to give input on these topics, and help us ensure our new settled minister shares a vision of community that is welcoming to people of all ages and nurtures our children, youth, and families.  Childcare available upon request.   Please RSVP if you plan to attend:  [email protected]
A cottage meeting for members of the high school youth group will be held during the service on Sunday, September 17.
Individuals can also choose to attend a cottage meeting right after service on September 10, 17, 24 or at the Federal Way Panera restaurant on Thursday, September 14 from 4 to 7 pm.

Are You Ready to Join the Team?
Seeking nursery volunteers, and an assistant for the ages 10-14 group.  Volunteer positions are one Sunday a month, during the service.  No need to have taught before, or to be an expert in Untarian Universalism--what's needed is enthusiasm for learning and providing a positive environment for our young people.  Contact Melinda for more information.

Helping our Neighbors
We are collecting household items, personal items, and shelf stable food stuffs for the clients at Hospitality House and the Federal Way Day Center.  Items will be collected during the worship service. Bath towels, new or good, and large trash bags are especially welcome.
The Day Center kitchen has microwave ovens and boiling water, but no stove now. We request food donations that require minimal cooking.

Attention Photographers!
Saltwater is in the process of updating our website.  I am looking for photos of children, youth, and families engaged in church activities.  If you have photos you can share, please email [email protected]

Weekly Playgroup Will Take A Break for the Summer
If you are interested in helping organize this group in the fall, contact Katie Einander for more information  [email protected]

Parents, Please Remember
As summer weather returns, our young people often want to play in our wooded area. We ask that children or youth get permission from their parents, travel in groups of three or more, and sign out with Melinda in the Lighthouse. This helps to ensure our children and youth are safe, and that parents know where to find them .

Do You Support Saltwater Church?
An announcement from the Stewardship Team:  Saltwater is nearing the end of our annual pledging time.  Thank you to everyone who turned in their 2017-2018 pledge by our preferred date of April 2!  There is still time to pledge if you have not notified us of yours.  But we are in budget season and would like to know your planned contribution soon.  So far, we have $182,000 pledged for the 2017-2018 church year which starts in JULY 2017.  If you attended the budget discussions in February, you will know we hope and expect to receive more pledges to meet all the wonderful goals we have for this exciting year.  You can still place your pledge card in the Welcome Table in the Welcoming Room, mail or turn it in to the church office, drop it in the offertory basket on Sunday or email it to [email protected].  To facilitate the closing of the 2017 Pledge Drive and help move the budgeting season forward, the members of the Stewardship Team (Jean Spohn, Patrick Finney, Suzanne Laurel, Dorothy Burt, Vickie Carey and other helpers) will soon be contacting those church members who have not yet turned in their pledge. Look forward to our call, or turn in your pledge today!

Childcare for Church Events
To request childcare for church events, please contact Director of  Family  Ministries Melinda Einander at [email protected]  You can also use the online  childcare request form
Please remember to request childcare in advance of your event (1 week in advance if possible).  Childcare requests made the day of the event generally cannot be honored.

Allergies, Nametags, and Registration
In order to ensure that the Lighthouse is a safe and welcoming place for children and youth, including those with dietary restrictions and allergies, theFamily  Ministries team has developed new guidelines for snacks served in the Lighthouse  on Sunday mornings.
Children's allergies will be listed on the back of their nametags, so that teachers can easily check for allergies.  We will also post a list of snack ingredients in each classroom, and provide additional snack options as needed.  We ask that all children and youth wear their nametags, so that teachers are not left wondering if there are allergies that they don't know about.  We will have temporary nametags available for visitors at the Lighthouse entryway and in the classrooms.
Because we have several children with severe nut allergies, we do not serve snacks containing nuts or peanuts, and ask that no nuts be brought into the Lighthouse during our class time.
Please register your children in the Lighthouse entryway if you have not already done so this year.  If you are new to Saltwater, please register your child if you plan to be attending regularly.  If your child was registered last year and you have not yet registered this year, please check in with me to update your family's information.
