Fall Lawn Care - Best To Do It Now
Fall is the best time to improve your lawn.

lawn care

Set up your lawn for success for the following season.

As air temperatures cool and weed competition wanes, now is the time to seed, fertilize or aerate your lawn.

Although air temps are dropping, soil temps are at their highest which makes for quick lawn seed germination.  With the cooler night temps as well, summer dormant lawns will begin to grow again, so an application of high nitrogen fertilizer will green up your lawn quickly.

For those of you fighting moss problems, aerating your lawn and adding organic matter is perhaps the best thing you can do.

One other issue in the lawn this time of year can be grubs.  Stop in and we'll advise on what product to use for these insects.

No matter what you need to do to your lawn - seed, feed or control insects - fall is the best time to do it!!

Perfect Time to Plant!

Here is why it is a great time to plant trees and shrubs.

Plants in the garden center have grown, flowered, fruited and from now on will just grow roots.  This means you are getting a much larger plant with a better chance of survival compared to when you purchased plants in the spring.

Then in early spring, fall planted perennials, trees and shrubs will be well-established. When the following summer arrives, these plants are better prepared to deal with heat and drought.

In addition, frequent fall rains and overnight dews make for excellent plant establishment.  We have brought in fresh nursery stock from two of our best nurseries and the plants from spring look great as well.  Stop by and see what we have in stock.

You may  just find a great deal on an over sized plant.
Houseplants for Health

Right now with school back in session and most of us thinking about more time inside, we have stocked a huge number of easy to grow, low care and low light houseplants. We also have Orchids, African Violets and several other flowering options.

With technology running our lives, toxins filling our air and limited time in the natural world, our personal environment becomes crucial to our well being. For better mental and physical health, lets talk about the health benefits of houseplants.

While some plants are better than others for absorbing pollutants, all plants have properties that are useful for improving indoor air quality.

Here are a few  ways that plants can help improve your health:

Common Cold

Indoor plants increase humidity levels and decrease dust, reducing cold-related illnesses by more than 30%.

Drowsiness

Excess carbon dioxide can elevate drowsiness levels. During photosynthesis, plants remove carbon dioxide from

the air.

Stress

Houseplants can contribute to a feeling of well being, making you calm and optimistic. Plus, plants have been known to lower blood pressure due to their stress-relieving nature.

Allergies

Exposing your children to plant-related allergies early in life works like a custom allergy shot and may build your child's immunity.

Dry Skin

Plants are a natural humidifier, and can soften the air and

increase the moisture level in your home.

Insomnia

Since plants give off oxygen, they can help improve your night's sleep.

If you're looking for easy plants, Peace Lilies, Dracaenas, and Golden Pothos are some of the most hearty, least finicky indoor houseplants. Other easy plants include: Colorful Croton, Chinese Evergreen, Weeping Fig, Coffee Plant, and Philodendrons.
