Bartleby's Books will host a book signing with Chris Diamond, author of Ski Inc. and former President of Mount Snow on Thursday, September 7th at 4pm. "You can't make this stuff up." Chris Diamond heard that refrain regularly during his 44-year career in the ski-resort industry, when he guided major ski resorts from Vermont to Colorado and was intimately involved in the most significant issues shaping the sport. So when he finally retired from his position as the president and COO of the Steamboat Ski & Resort Corp. in 2015, he decided to write it all down.
Armed with English degrees from Middlebury College and the University of Massachusetts, and fresh off a tour as a lieutenant in the Vietnam War, the author did not set out to build a career in the ski business. But in 1972, he wound up at Killington Ski Area, where he came under the wing of resort founder and visionary Preston Leete Smith and legendary marketer Foster T. Chandler. Killington at the time was setting the pace in everything from snowmaking to recruiting new skiers, and Diamond was a quick learner.
What followed was his total immersion in the resort industry, a business that evolved from simply getting skiers up the mountain into a multifaceted, vertically integrated service industry. He witnessed the seminal moments in resort ownership as it evolved from single-area entrepreneurs to conglomerates, including the dramatic implosion of Les Otten's American Skiing Company and the downsizing of Intrawest during the 2008 Great Recession.
Diamond isn't shy in pointing out mistakes made along the way, including his own. Ski Inc. is required reading and an entertaining ride for anyone who works in skiing, wants to work in the industry, or is just passionate about the sport.
Chris Diamond is a resort consultant and author. He started his career as an assistant to the president of Killington in 1972, and was the president of Mount Snow, Vermont, from 1977 to 1994. From 1994 to 1996 he served as the vice president for Business Development and president of the Vermont resorts for S-K- I Ltd. He then spent 17 years at the helm of Steamboat before retiring in 2015. He is a past director and chairman of Colorado Ski Country USA and of the National Ski Areas Association, which presented him with its Lifetime Achievement Award in 2013. Chris lives in Steamboat Springs with his wife, Eileen.

The Southern Vermont Natural History Museum is Hosting the 7th Annual Wildlife Festival during Wine and Havest Weekend
The Vermont Wildlife Festival was first held in 2010 on Hogback Mountain in Marlboro Vermont. It was originally intended as an opportunity for locals and visitors to the region to share their passion for the outdoors in all its facets. Representatives from the hunting and conservation communities, wildlife rescues, State agencies and nature centers all came out for a fun day of learning and fun in the beautiful Vermont outdoors!
The event has continued to grow and this year moves to Mount Snow resort! With the help of Mount Snow, the Southern Vermont Chamber of Commerce and Zoocademy, the Museum is keeping that spirit of inclusiveness! The event is admission by a donation of your choice and we again have a wide variety of attractions to engage anyone with an interest in the outdoors. Live birds of prey, reptile rescues and a live wolf demonstration bring the flashy live animals into focus. The Deerfield Valley Sportsmans' Club and the American Museum of Fly Fishing will keep us learning about the hunting and fishing traditions of Vermont. The State is sending interactive exhibits and experts from the DEC, Fish and Wildlife and Forest Parks and Recreation.
In all, we have over 28 groups who will be on hand to entertain and educate, including a number of new additions like an influx of survival schools, a full sized tipi and a native culture exhibition from Healing Winds! The event runs from 10:00am to 4:00pm on September 24, bring the whole family for a fun fall outing!
In downtown Wilmington you might've noticed a little more color and pizzazz on the exterior of the historic O.O. Ware building. The Deerfield Valley Rotary Club recently sponsored a beautification project, in partnership with talented street artist & muralist, Chinon Maria! Guest blogger, Rebecca Duncan from Vermont Television Network (VTTV) had a chance to catch up with the artist to learn more about this collaborative effort to brighten up downtown Wilmington.

Like most German-themed Oktoberfest events, the 20th Annual Mount Snow Oktoberfest will have plenty of beer, schnitzel and Oom-pah music; but throw in kids games, pumpkin painting, an apple sling shot and the famous "schnitzel toss" and you've got two days of fun for the whole family! A Columbus Day Weekend tradition since 1997, the Mount Snow Oktoberfest is one of our signature festivals and was named a 2017 Top 10 Fall Event by the Vermont Chamber of Commerce.
The Kid's Zone is where families will find festival games like the beanbag toss, a huge bouncy house, pumpkin painting and other kid-friendly activities. While the young ones are playing, the big kids can enjoy a large selection of beers from at least 25 different German and domestic breweries as well as authentic German fare served out of Marktfrisch in the Main Base Lodge and the sausage roast outside of Cuzzins. Plus, try your hand at games like the keg toss, yodeling contest and stein holding as well as a horseshoe tournament. For you shoppers, don't forget the
