Last spring BFA's Board of Directors approved naming the BFA Library after one of our school's founding family members who's service and dedication to the school is unparalleled. The BFA Library will now be known as the Shelly Dana Library to recognize Shelly Dana's extraordinary impact at BFA.
As a founding family member, ensuring the success of BFA became Shelly Dana's personal mission. She was a community builder and leader who inspired and encouraged others to commit their time and energy to BFA. BFA's founder Jason Sanders commented, "Her leadership during the formative and early years was key to the establishment of the school. Over and over again, Shelly took the lead organizing committees, activities and parents meetings--all successfully...without her...our vibrant community would not be as strong."
Thanks to her inspiration, tireless work and leadership, volunteers rallied around her and put together the first BENefit Bash to raise funds for much needed items, such as books for the library, before we even had a building. Shelly felt strongly that every child at BFA should have access to a robust library and took action to make sure that became a reality.
Shelly Dana was president of BFA's first Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) and created an independent 501(c)(3) dedicated to supporting the school. She volunteered hundreds of hours and led efforts that raised more than $600,000 for the school. Much of the funds during the school's early years were spent on important literacy, technology, outdoor (playground/signage) and building improvements, arts, physical education and science purchases. BFA Board member and former employee Burgandy Hodge commented, "There aren't many places around the school that you could look and not see Shelly's hand. Whether it is the marquee outside of the building, the playground, the BFA sign on the back wall of the main office, or resources in a classroom--it's easy to see evidence of Shelly's hard work and dedication. This honor recognizes all her efforts on behalf of our staff, students and the entire BFA community."
Shelly spearheaded many of the traditions we value today such as the Harvest Festival, Ben Franklin's Birthday and Field Day. She also oversaw the Father/Daughter and Mother/Son events when those transitioned to the PTO. These traditions are essential to the vibrant sense of community that BFA students, parents and staff still enjoy today.
Shelly's impact also can be seen in our robust volunteer community. She not only led the PTO for years but, more importantly, she inspired and encouraged volunteers and made volunteering rewarding and fun. The vast volunteer network that Shelly helped to organize is still visible and active today throughout the school. Families in need, students trying to raise money through a bake sale, and teachers who want a hot meal in the midst of conferences still benefit from the PTO Baking Committee; and our Room Parent network serves as an essential part of communication, staff appreciation and community building. Shelly firmly believed that recognizing volunteers was essential and started the tradition of rewarding families who met their volunteer quota with a free community event, generally held at Pirates Cove.
What makes Shelly's contributions extraordinary is her leadership, creativity, talent for motivating volunteers and willingness to take on whatever the school needed to fulfill its Mission and Vision. Her influence can be felt, not only in the infrastructure of the school, its library and in the technology we use, but also in the culture and spirit of our community.
A dedication ceremony will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 14, in the Library. If you have any questions, please
email Pam Betts.

COME LEARN ALL ABOUT DESTINATION IMAGINATION!
Have you heard about Destination Imagination (DI)? The organization's vision is "
to teach students the creative process and empower them with the skills needed to succeed in an ever changing world." Annually, DI offers seven new academic challenges in the fields of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), fine arts, service learning and early learning. In solving a challenge, students learn the creative process from imagination to innovation and the skills needed to thrive in school, their careers and beyond.
If this sounds like something that would interest your student and you as a parent volunteer (a variety of roles are available, but Team Managers are always needed),
please attend an informational/kick-off meeting at 6:30 p.m., Monday, Sept. 11, in the Sanders Science Lab (first floor science lab, room 145) to learn more about this amazing program. We encourage you to bring your student if s/he is new to DI.
Last year, BFA's DI teams had two teams make it to the state competition and one of the teams advanced to Global Finals. We are looking forward to another great year! If you are interested in joining a team or being a team manager, please
email
Jason Sunahara, BFA DI coordinator.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR BASE FAMILIES
A Bit About BASE
BASE,
Before/After School Enrichment
, is a 'pay as you use' system. We do not require you to sign up in advance, just be sure to complete the necessary application forms before you use BASE for the first time. The day or days you need to use the BASE program, you will need to email your child's teacher (you can also email Mrs. Savoy) to let him/her know that you will need your child to go to BASE after school. For before school care, feel free to just bring them in for drop off.
New Drop Off and Pick Up Procedures
The procedures for BASE drop off and pick up are now a bit different than in years past. You will need to drop off and pick up your BASE student(s) on the northwest side of the building.
Specifically, go to the double doors for the Lightning (small) gym located in the back (northwest) side of the building. The easiest way for you to get there is to park in the preschool
lot, which has the basketball hoops, walk up to the doors and ring the BASE doorbell.
The doorbell is located on the north side window of the foyer on the silver panel. Ring the bell
and someone will come to the door to let you in. If you have trouble or have questions, please
email BASE.
On another note...
Once you have completed the necessary paperwork and are registered in the BASE program
for the 2017-18 school year, you will be able to set up your
MyProcare account.
Please note, if your registration is not complete, you will be denied access to MyProcare. BASE billing will be processed on a weekly basis. If you are enrolled in Tuition Express, your BASE tuition due will be paid automatically from your account. You can review charges and payments anytime in your MyProcare account.
For those families not yet enrolled in Tuition Express, you will receive an email with instructions on how to make payment once billing is complete. Please note, currently it is optional enroll in Tuition Express.
As of Jan 1, 2018, we will be moving to mandatory automated payments for all BASE accounts. Please complete your Tuition Express Authorization form today.

Our mission is to create young adults with character like America's founding Renaissance man, Benjamin Franklin: well-read, scientifically curious, and civically engaged.
|
Our students will excel academically through a challenging, sequenced curriculum that emphasizes math, science, and literacy. We will be a data driven institution, focusing on individual students. Our students, teachers, parents, staff, and leaders will be held accountable for the success of our school.
