Brian Hoyer's baptism as the San Francisco 49ers quarterback was put to the test by a stout Carolina Panthers defense which pressured him throughout the game, leading to five sacks. Hoyer threw no touchdowns and the Panthers left Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara as winners on Sunday, Sept. 10. Final score: Panthers 23, 49ers 3. In 1868 the Cincinnati Red Sockings became the first team to expose their socked legs. According to MLB's official historian, John Thorn, pulling up the pants to more closely resemble a cricketer's uniform also had one other benefit: "High socks displayed manly calves, which the ladies liked." San Francisco Giants Update
|
Joe Panik, San Francisco's virtuoso second baseman, was on a recent hitting tear and has entered the team's record books by breaking the franchise record for most hits in a three-game series. Against the Colorado Rockies between Sept. 4-6, Panik tallied 12 hits and raised his batting average by 18 percentage points to .285. Photo by Rich Yee. |
San Francisco Giants Update:
After a rough week on the road, the Giants showed why they have the fewest road wins in the National League. San Francisco started the week in Colorado, where they lost two-out-of-three in hitter-friendly Coors Field. The Giants avoided the sweep due to a stellar performance from Johnny Cueto, who threw seven strikeouts over five innings, while only giving up a single run. Second baseman Joe Panik fueled the offense, going 5-for-6 on Wednesday night and accumulating 12 hits over the three-game set, setting a franchise record. The road struggles continued in Chicago, as the Giants were able to salvage the series opener against the White Sox before getting beaten down over the weekend. The Giants have 17 games left in the season and will need to win at least seven to avoid a 100-loss season. This week the team comes home for divisional play against the struggling Los Angeles Dodgers and Arizona Diamondbacks

Oakland A's

The Oakland A's and Houston Astros engaged in a slugfest on Friday evening, Sept. 8, with both teams hitting a total of seven home runs. But there were other dramatic moments as well. Astros right fielder George Springer opened up the ninth inning with a single and with two out, attempted to score on a double by Josh Reddick, taking full flight just ahead
of the arriving ball...

As part of their outreach to hear from fans regarding a possible location for their new ballpark, to be announced by the end of the year, the
Oakland A's hosted three Roadshows, inviting fans to met one-on-one with A's president Dave Kaval and express their opinions. Above, Katherine "Kat" Brown sits down with Kaval at
Everett & Jones BBQ in Oakland on August 22. Altogether about 200 fans had a chance to share their comments and suggestions.

Oakland Athletics Update:
In a week that started with a couple of tough losses, the Athletics were able to right the ship and win five in a row, including a four-game sweep of the division-leading Astros. The A's started the homestand against the Los Angeles Angels, losing the first two games in extra innings. On Tuesday the Athletics had the bases loaded with a chance to tie or win the game in the bottom of the 10th, but were unable to get it done. Sean Manaea prevented the sweep, pitching six scoreless innings to earn his 10th
win of the season. The offense then picked up the slack when the Astros came to town, scoring at least nine runs in each of the four games. This offensive explosion was highlighted in Saturday's doubleheader, as the A's dropped 11 runs on the Astros pitching staff in each of the games. After Sunday's win, the Athletics improved to 42-33 at the Coliseum. They will try to continue the win streak on Tuesday evening at Fenway Park against the Boston Red Sox.

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton (1), returning from offseason surgery to repair a partially torn rotator cuff in his throwing shoulder, threw for two touchdowns and was not sacked throughout the game. Oakland Raiders

Oakland's running back Marshawn Lynch, seen above during the Raiders first preseason home game against the Los Angeles Rams, in which he played sparingly, showed no rust from his brief retirement in their impressive 26-16 road win against the Tennessee Titans. Lynch ran 18 times for 76 yards and did so with authority. Next up for the Raiders are the New York Jets, who visit the Oakland Coliseum on Sunday, Sept. 17, at 1 p.m. on CBS. Photo by Ed Jay. |

Oakland Raiders placekicker Giorgio Tavecchio had the best first game of any kicker in NFL history on Sunday, in the team's win against the Tennessee Titans. A perennial preseason player, Tavecchio was given the chance to play when Sebastian Janikowski was placed on IR. Tavecchio was 4-for-4 in his debut, including connecting twice with kicks of 52 yards.

Writer Dave Newhouse (left) and track star Eddie Hart could not autograph their new book fast enough for the overflow crowd attending their book signing of Disqualified, Eddie Hart, Munich 1972, and the Voices of the Most Tragic Olympics on Wednesday evening, Sept. 6 at The Book Tree in Montclair. Hart had previously tied the world record in the 100-meter dash and was a strong favorite to again win in the 1972 Olympics in Munich, Germany. Then the inexplicable happened: Hart was disqualified after arriving seconds late for a quarterfinal heat. How Technology Is Changing the Business of Sports
BUS 172 -- Quarter: Fall; On-campus course; Sept. 26-Oct. 31, Drop Deadline: Oct. 9; Tuition: $450; Status: Open; Day(s): Tuesdays; Duration: 6 weeks; Time: 7 p.m. -- 8:50 p.m.; Unit: 1; Instructor: Andy Dolich
Like all businesses, the sports world is adapting to satisfy the new demands of customers (while expecting increases in profitability, of course). Most of the evolution in the sports world is being spearheaded by technological advances. These changes are powerfully modifying the interaction between the sports provider and the sports consumer. The range of change is multidimensional, creating new entrepreneurial opportunities and unique business models.
This course will bring into the classroom industry experts who will discuss how newer technologies are embedded in, and driving, these developments, including (1) "wiring" of arenas and stadiums of the future to enhance the fan experience; (2) analytics and metrics impacting not only athlete selection and performance, but also the knowledge level of fans; (3) management challenges of building a global fan base that permits expansions across the world; (4) virtual-reality spectatorship for those not at the actual event; (5) new interactive opportunities for fan engagement; and (6) emergence of esports (new franchises and leagues). Each session will include an extensive question-and-answer session to cover entrepreneurial ideas related to the week's topics.
Scheduled participating speakers include:
* Jamie Zaninovich, Deputy Commissioner/Chief Operating Officer, Pac 12 Conference
* Sally Ann Reiss,Founder and CEO, PlayyOn
* David Koppett, Vice President of Content Strategy, NBC Sports Bay Area
* Bill Schlough, Senior Vice President & CIO, San Francisco Giants
* Tracy Hughes, Founder and CEO, Silicon Valley Sports Ventures
Andy Dolich is the instructor. He has held executive positions in the NFL, NBA, MLB and NHL.

Seven drivers remain in contention for the 2017 series championship, but the mindset couldn't be more simple for points leader Josef Newgarden. "We can control our own destiny," the Team Penske driver said on a national media teleconference. "It's in our hands to make it happen." Tickets and camping are still available for the GoPro Grand Prix of Sonoma, which offers double the normal race points to the winner. The race airs live on NBCSN at 3:30 p.m. PT on Sunday, Sept. 17. It took eight years to build the Roman Coliseum 1,900 years ago |
|
|
Howard Terminal, one of three proposed sites for the Oakland A's new ballpark |
|
|
The A's to Z of a New Ballpark
By Andy Dolich
|
The ultra-detailed stadium questionnaire has been circulated and the community meetings continue. The Oakland A's have said that they will select a new ballpark site by the end of the year. The countdown clock is ticking with
112 days
left as of today.
The A' regular season ends on October 1st.
A's fans, Oaklanders and Major League Baseball are envisioning a brighter future for the team and the city once the site, financial details, design, construction timelines and infrastructure costs are released.
This critical choice will be a watershed moment for Oakland and Alameda County elected officials and their taxpaying constituents. That's when they will learn what they might be expected to pay for infrastructure improvements at Peralta College, Howard Terminal or the Coliseum site. According to team president Dave Kaval, all are still in contention.
If team owner John Fisher isn't going to cover 100 percent of the cost, that's when the community will have to ask if any of that money would be better spent on education, public safety, affordable housing, a growing homeless challenge and improved community infrastructure. Team officials say that the ballpark will be privately financed but the multi-million dollar devil will be in the details of the final agreement.
A's ownership has long said it is unable to build a winning team because of the decrepit condition of Roto-Rooter Coliseum. The team believes that increased revenue from the new ballpark will provide the resources to compete with the big money teams.
The A's are a major recipient of Major League Baseball's revenue sharing system. The A's turn a reported yearly profit pocketing $30 million dollars plus from fellow team owners. Majority owner John Fisher has seen his original investment of $180 million in 2005 appreciate to around $900 million, according to Forbes Magazine. As of today, September 11, the A's are last in the AL West, 23 games out, and 29th in MLB attendance.
One of the key reasons to speed up the ballpark decision is that Major League Baseball's revenue sharing financial assistance program is coming to an end. The A's take will be diminished by 25 percent each year until it hits zero dollars in 2020.
A's president Dave Kaval has worked tirelessly this season to change fans' perception about the team's future. The recent stadium survey and open meetings with multiple community constituencies are focused on helping the team select one of three sites and develop a menu of options for seating, costs to fans, parking, transportation, food and beverage selection, ballpark amenities. A critical element that was left out of the survey had to do with what type of players and team the fans might want to play in this new ballpark, while trying to win a World Series.
With all that in mind, there is much we need to know about any new stadium plan. The press conference promises to be a full contact affair.
Transparency is an overused word in today's world. We shall see how crystal clear the answers to all of these questions, and many others, will be.
* What are the top five reasons you selected this site?
* What will the ballpark cost?
* Will it be 100% privately funded? Is John Fisher paying for all the ballparks costs,
including infrastructure?
* If not, where is the additional money coming from?
* When will you be breaking ground and when will the ballpark open?
* What are the plans to add retail, transportation, residential, youth sports facilities, or
anything else, as part of the new development?
From Oakland's mayor, I'd want to know what plans the city and county have for the soon to be franchiseless Coliseum site?
It took only eight years to conceptualize, finance, work through the politics, design and construct the ancient Colosseum in Rome, 1,900 years ago.
We are now into Year 12 for a viable plan to erect a new Coliseum, aka A's Ballpark.
Will this critical decision for the future of the franchise be a "Veni, Vidi, Vici" announcement?
We will soon know.

152nd Scottish Highland Gathering & Games
|
A world champion at work!
The Pleasanton Fair Grounds hosted the 152nd annual Gathering of the Clans, Sept. 1-2, under the ongoing sponsorship of the Caledonian Club of San Francisco, featuring a weekend of all things Scottish. One prominent activity is Athletic Games, contests with histories going back beyond written records to the raw Druid period. One of these contests is
Weight for Height, which uses a 56-pound (4 stone) block with a handle tossed over an elevated bar, similar to that used in pole vaulting. In this sequence,
Mike Zolkiewicz
goes through his ritual to the throw. Like golfers and batters, these athletes have developed routines to be consistent. Mike seems to be on to something as he has held and broken the World Record four times. His top toss this year is 19' 1".
|
|
|
Mike's ritual includes chalking a smiley face on his dark shorts before every toss, delivering positive, motivational speeches to himself, motivating the crowd, then assessing the height and his position leading up to the toss itself. In a show of good sportsmanship and camaraderie, all the competitors and officials have words of encouragement for all. |
|
|
Over clean! Move the bar up a notch! In case you are wondering, this Champion stands
6' 4" and weighs in about a Big Mac and chocolate shake shy of 300 compact pounds.

Francisco. Torchio also intercepted a pass on defense from his position of free safety.
Tochio's dad was a quarterback at Cal, and famously won The Big Game over John Elway
