NYCOMEC promotes its member institutions' GME programs to prospective trainees by using several tools. One essential tool is the annual NYCOMEC Brochure. We are currently updating information for the 2018 Brochure: statistics, programs, salaries, new staff members/titles, and digital photographs. If you did not receive an update request from us, please email Stephanie LaBarbera, M.H.A., Manager, Trainee Services, or call 516-686-3952 . In order to allow sufficient production time, all information is due by October 25th.
NYCOMEC Trainee Committee Meeting

NYCOMEC held its first Trainee Committee Meeting of the 2017-2018 postdoctoral training year on Thursday, September 7, 2017, in the Serota Academic Center located on the NYITCOM-Old Westbury Campus. A total of 20 Trainees from various NYCOMEC member institutions were present, both in person and by teleconference. David Broder, D.O., President, NYCOMEC, gave a brief orientation about NYCOMEC's role in graduate medical education and the importance of the Trainee Committee.

The committee held its election for Vice Chairman, and the two representatives from NYCOMEC sponsored, ACGME-accredited programs who will serve on the Graduate Medical Education Committee (GMEC). Yasmine Leigh, D.O., an Internal Medicine resident from Orange Regional Medical Center, was re-elected Chairman last spring, and  Kevin Lemaire, D.O., a Psychiatry resident also from Orange Regional Medical Center, was elected Vice Chairman. The elected  GME Committee Representatives are  Mitchell Hervert, D.O., first year Internal Medicine resident at St. Bernards Medical Center and  Casey Toombs, D.O., first year Emergency Medicine resident at the Orange Regional Medical Center.
Faculty Development Program:  Quality Improvement-Why, How and When in GME?

NYCOMEC hosted on September 8, 2017 a faculty development program titled Quality Improvement - Why, How and When in GME? presented by  Daniel Lombardi, D.O. , Patient Safety Officer, Associate Medical Director, and Director of Medical Education, St. Barnabas Hospital.  In his excellent presentation Dr. Lombardi underlined the impact and importance of quality improvement in graduate medical education (GME), delineated the Model for Improvement developed by Associates in Process Improvement, a model that is used at St. Barnabas Hospital, and emphasized the role of sustaining improvement because, as he mentioned, "Improvement alone is not enough", it needs to be a sustaining process.

Webinar: The ACGME Accreditation Site Visit

Ingrid Philibert, Ph.D., MBA, Senior Vice President, Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), and Executive Managing Editor, Journal of Graduate Medical Education (JGME) presented a webinar titled The ACGME Accreditation Site Visit o n Wednesday, August 23, 2017. 

The webinar offered current and practical information about the ACGME accreditation site visit in the Single Accreditation System (SAS), focusing on site visit scheduling, program notification, preparation for the visit and what to expect on the day of the site visit.

Proposed Policy Changes for Public Comment: Postdoctoral Training

Proposed changes to the Section X: AOA Program Accreditation during Transition to Single GME Accreditation System, are posted on the AOA website for a review and public comment period and  open until Monday,  October 16, 2017. The proposed changes could impact the eligibility of some training programs to participate in the 2019 AOA Match and the ability to accept new trainees.

TIVRA - Update and Verify Trainee Contract Information
 
The Trainee Information Verification and Registration Audit (TIVRA) system is now open for institutions to UPDATE and VERIFY contract information previously reported for the  2016-2017 academic year and  REPORT new and continuing contracts for the  2017-2018 academic year. The deadline is October 15, 2017.

NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn is adding a $83.7 million ambulatory surgery center,  Crain's reportedThe surgery center, with six operating rooms, will help ease overcrowding in the hospital.
Maimonides Plans $15.9M Cardio-Thoracic ICU

Maimonides Medical Center is seeking state approval for a $15.9 million renovation of its cardio-thoracic intensive care unit to respond to growing demand and improve the patient experience.

Stony Brook Southampton Hospital Opens Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory

On Tuesday, September 5, Stony Brook Medicine opened a fully-operational cardiac catheterization laboratory at Stony Brook Southampton Hospital, making it the only facility on the East End of Long Island capable of providing clinically complex care to critically ill heart patients.
