 Dog Days of Summer

Breaking news: Downtown Santa Barbara has an official Office Dog! Millie comes to the office with me every day, and that got me to thinking: where else are dogs welcome in Downtown Santa Barbara?

Holly working the runway at Savoy Cafe & Deli.
On a quest, I learned that many downtown restaurants, galleries, shops and tasting rooms allow dogs, with m any offering treats and water bowls to accommodate doggy customers. Kathy Shields at Savoy Café & Deli (24 W. Figueroa) sent a photo of their "dog parking" corner, as well as a photo of Holly, lounging on the popular dog hangout, the patio carpet runner. At The Grapeseed Co, Kristin Fraser says, "We make an entire doggy line called Dirty Dog Organics!"

Eureka! Burger's patio (601 Paseo Nuevo) is a great place for brunch with a pup - they even have treats. Viva Modern Mexican (1114 State) was so enthusiastic, we ate there twice in one week. Millie perched c omfortably on my lap while I got a pedicure at Nu-Image Nail Salon ( 617 State).

Within a few blocks block of Millie's office, she has many dog-buddies:
  • Bear at Kotuku Elixir Bar (25 E. De la Guerra)
  • Sophie at Jamie Slone Wines (23 E. De la Guerra)
  • Cooper at The Riviera Towel Company (727 E. De la Guerra Plaza).
  • Henry at Santa Barbara Arts (1114 State #24)
  • Moose at Breakfast (711 Chapala)
  • Chili Pepper at Indigo Interiors (1321 State)
  • Daisy, Brand Ambassador at Game Seeker (537 State)
Leaving summer behind and zooming toward the Fall, we're noticing more and more pups parading along State Street, but some rules apply. Dogs must be leashed, please call ahead to check with restaurants before arriving with your pooch, and I think it's safe to say that everyone will appreciate you cleaning up after your dog.

Stay tuned - we're working on a new Dog Friendly Downtown Santa Barbara page for our website, including info about which Downtown SB locations accept dogs. I know I've just scratched the surface of Dog Friendly Downtown Santa Barbara - but I'm having a great time reimagining my view!

Non-Profits to Know:

All For Animals

" Educating, entertaining, and inspiring both youth and adults
 and celebrating the human-animal bond."

Karen Lee Stevens, Founder and Executive Director of All For Animals, started the organization in 1997 as a community resource for animal lovers in Santa Barbara. In 2002, AFA incorporated for the purpose of teaching young people to be kind and respectful to animals, people and the planet. Today, the organization's vision focuses on giving children the opportunity to experience the unconditional love of animal companions through humane education and literacy programs that nurture
 the human-animal b
ond.

Compassion for Critters humane education program has reached thousands of children in Santa Barbara through reading, storytelling, and interaction with a variety of animals. The presentations build on the natural curiosity and affection that children have toward animals and helps them create safe and satisfying relationships with animals that will last a lifetime.

ARF! (Animals + Reading = Fun!) is an innovative literacy program that gives children in grades K-6 an opportunity to improve their reading skills while inspiring them to become life-long readers by reading aloud to specially trained therapy dogs. ARF! is the only program of its kind in Santa Barbara that provides a results-based literacy program utilizing therapy dog teams in a classroom setting.
In addition to their programs for children, All For Animals sponsors  therapy dog training classes, which teach dogs and their human companions the skills they will need in order to volunteer together in the community and bring joy and smiles to those in need. Since 2013, AFA has trained more than 400 dogs to become therapy dogs!
