Reflections from Fr. Rick

"I trust in the steadfast love of God forever and ever."

Psalm 52:8

As I write this message, Hurricane Irma is moving over the northernmost portions of the Virgin Islands and traveling through Puerto Rico and is forecasted to start impacting Florida late Sunday or early Monday.

I know we are all praying and making preparations. "Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayers." Hopefully, we and our brothers and sisters throughout Irma's path will be spared from catastrophic disaster.

Frankly, no one can predict how Irma may impact us locally.  We are following the guidance of our state and local officials in order to remain safe. As of now, we are only canceling the 6PM service.  We will make our final determination for the 8 & 10:15 services on Friday morning and will notify you via e-blast on Friday by 1PM.

I was recently reminded of a powerful image from Scripture when Jesus exercised authority over the sea. Jesus commanded the stormy sea to be calm: "Who is this?" The disciples ask. "For even the winds and the sea obey him" (Matt 8:26). The point is that God's power to save, renew, heal, and restore is infinitely greater than the sea's power to destroy.

It is with this hope that we wait together, for Jesus is with us.

In Christ's Love,

A Message About Hurricane Irma

Handicapped and Limited Mobility Parking at St. Luke's Cathedral

For Saturday, September 9th Ordinations, the parking spaces in the Jefferson Street parking lot (the small lot behind the church building) will be designated as  "Limited Mobility" or "Handicapped" parking. We are asking everyone able to do so to park in the Washington Street lot or in the Region's Bank garage.  Anyone who parks in the Regions Bank can get a validated parking pass from the ushers at the Cathedral.

Your Prayers and Presence are Requested!
A PRAYER FOR THOSE IN THE PATH OF HURRICANE IRMA

God of heaven and earth, God who carries our lives and the lives of all in Irma's path in your hands, be with all those in peril this day. Help them to release their anxieties and fears into your caring hands, knowing in faith that your will for us is life and everlasting good. Send your holy angels to watch over them and guard them. May your angels spread their holy wings to give all in danger shelter against the storm. For you alone, O God, are all good, all life, all love, and that love is for us; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Outreach Ministries Supplies Lake Silver Snacks

SMC Vestry member Mike Robertson (left, with his son and daughter) is standing with Antonio Perez, Parent Liaison and Erin LeRoy, Curriculum Resource Teacher, at Lake Silver Elementary when delivering St. Michael's-donated snacks for the school children.
Feed My Lambs - How God Uses Our Connections To Others For Outreach

Our first deliveries to Lake Silver Elementary and Edgewater High Schools went out last week - several boxes and bags were delivered to EACH SCHOOL!  Thank you to everyone who helped sort and deliver.

Thinking back, it is awe-inspiring to see how God has used so many people to get us to this point:
  • It started with Andrew's idea for the Music Department to become involved with an Outreach Ministry.
  • The whole choir discussed what to do - but especially Beth Rohrer & Patricia Rapp who steered us toward a ministry stocking the food pantries of two local schools.
  • The Choir Members and families contributed those first few months.
  • A chance phone call with Susan Airth during the summer included info on the PARISH WIDE similar ministry in the church they attend when up in North Carolina, suggesting "....how about we do that at St. Michael's?"  ....AND.....
  • HERE WE ARE!! PRAISE GOD!
RETURN YOUR BAGS!  PLEASE!

When delivering the food bags last week, we counted about 25+ bags remain OUT THERE with parishioners.  Do you still have a Feed My Lambs bag?  They can be filled and brought to the Church Office at any time. We will reuse the same bags each month.

Love God.  Love Others.  Serve the World.
