Teach Peace through Basic Mediation Training
2017 Basic Mediation Training will be offered by Your Community Mediators of Yamhill County at their McMinnville downtown offices on two Fridays and two Saturdays this October (10/13, 10/14, 10/27 & 10/28).  The 32-hour training satisfies State of Oregon requirements for certified community volunteer mediators. Ongoing continuing education opportunities and supervised experience help trainees develop their skills and personal competence.

Business leaders might consider this skill training for their employees as a professional development opportunity, or may themselves become a volunteer mediator to give back to their community in a very worthwhile and satisfying way.

Participants learn and practice conflict resolution skills to increase effectiveness in listening to and communicating with people in discord; they will assist disputants to reach mutually satisfying agreements; enhance negotiation skills; work with strong emotions respectfully and constructively; manage cross-cultural differences; and respond appropriately to ethical dilemmas that arise in the mediation process.

For applications and registration rates (volunteer, non-profit/government, and professional development) contact YCM at [email protected], 503-435-2835 or visit our website: ycmediators.org    Limited scholarships are available for Spanish-speaking volunteers.

Local Businesswoman Leanna Gautney Is Finalist for Pet Industry Woman of Year Award
Women in the Pet Industry Network (WIPIN) recognizes extraordinary women in five pet business categories

McMinnville, Oregon (August 4, 2017) - Local business woman Leanna Gautney of Country Critters Pet Sitters, in McMinnville, has been named a finalist in the fifth annual Pet Industry Woman of the Year Award competition.

Gautney, who has been in business for 14 years, was nominated in the RISING STAR category. The other award categories are Solopreneur, Entrepreneur, Corporate, and Advocate.

The overall Pet Industry Woman of the Year will be chosen from the winners of these five categories. Winners will be announced Sept. 26th during an evening ceremony at the Women in the Pet Industry Conference and Awards Show in Portland, Oregon.
A panel of four independent judges reviewed and scored nominations for applicants in the five categories. This year's judges included a director of a non profit organization, a founder of a successful pet organization, a COO of a design firm, and a director of a top women's scholarship organization.

Gautney, will participate in a round table discussion during the WIPIN conference, which runs Sept. 24th through Sept. 26th at the Embassy Suites in Portland.

"The Pet Industry Women of the Year Awards were designed to recognize the amazing females who dedicate their time and talents to improving the lives of all pets - dogs, cats, birds, fish, horses and exotics - and their parents/guardians," said Shawna Schuh, president of WIPIN. "These awards are a celebration of women who have made highly successful careers in the pet industry: They shine in large part because they are so passionate about helping women as well as pets. Finalist Gautney is a perfect example! It is exciting to honor her and other women with a genuine calling to make the pet industry stronger."

Willamette Valley Medical Center Welcomes
Dr. Steven Maxfield to Their Medical Staff
McMinnville, September 7, 2017- Willamette Valley Medical Center is pleased to announce the new addition to our medical staff, Dr. Steven Maxfield, a Board Eligible Ophthalmologist. Dr. Maxfield recently completed his residency at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.

Dr. Maxfield was born in Seattle and grew up in Richland, Washington. He received a full tuition academic scholarship to attend Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, graduating magna cum laude with his Bachelor's degree in Neuroscience. For medical school, Dr. Maxfield traveled to the East Coast to attend Dartmouth Medical School and be closer to his wife's family. He stayed in that part of the country for a combined medicine/pediatrics internship at MetroWest Medical Center in Framingham, Massachusetts. Dr. Maxfield recently completed his ophthalmology residency at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota. He and his family are excited to make Oregon their new home. We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Maxfield as an extraordinary addition to WVMC's Medical Staff.

Dr. Maxfield reports that his interest in practicing medicine evolved over time, but "probably has its roots in watching my father care for patients and working in his dental office while in high school." In college, Dr. Maxfield took a neuroscience course that convinced him medicine was the career for him and he entered medical school thinking he would pursue neurology or neurosurgery. While at Dartmouth, Dr. Susan Pepin (a neuro-ophthalmologist) became his research mentor and introduced him to the field of ophthalmology wear he found his true passion. One of the things Dr. Maxfield loves most about ophthalmology is that he is often able to "discuss with the patient his or her symptoms, complete an exam, make a diagnosis, and provide a treatment that improves his or her life...all in one visit!"

Dr. Maxfield practices comprehensive ophthalmology at the McMinnville Eye Clinic, where he will treat many conditions, including:
- Cataracts - Glaucoma - Dry Eye Syndrome - Diabetic Retinopathy
- Macular Degeneration - Eyelid Disorders and Lesions - Corneal Disease

For more information you can contact Dr. Maxfield at:
