Scripture Lesson:  John 1:1-5
Sermon:  "Lights!  Camera?  Action...!"

This Sunday
I can't believe it's already September, and that Pastor Laura has already preached a series of sermons at Aldersgate, and did it with such grace (couldn't resist), depth and creativity.  I know she touched many of you in deeply spiritual ways.  I'm so grateful to have her with us.

This Sunday and in the months to come, we will examine the Gospel of John.  The gospel will be split into multiple parts beginning with the power of both word and light.  Throughout the series we will go, at least a bit, to Hollywood and the lights, the cameras, and particularly the action.  It is a truly remarkable story that has the potential to be a feature film.  On Sunday I'll introduce two of the key players that begin the Gospel of John.  One is nicknamed, "Word" and the other...well he's just angry and strange.  Already sounds a bit like a Hollywood film.  As we move through the year, there will be love stories, friendships, betrayals, violence, wonderment, miracles that Spielberg would have trouble putting on screen, and a surprise ending.  As we move through each piece, we will explore what this story means for us today, and there is much here that can teach us about our roles in the world.  But for now we need to get through the introduction.  It sets the table for what's coming.  So to prepare simply read the first five verses of the opening chapter of the Gospel of John.  I look forward to seeing you on Sunday as we begin "A Year in the Light."

Aldersgate Exploration Luncheon
October 1 @ 12:30pm

Have you wondered about how Aldersgate United Methodist Church began, or why the name, or how things work around here?   Or how about what a "United Methodist" is, or even how the statement regarding our mission and vision was born?  Have you ever thought about joining this church, what church membership means, or even how to get more involved and how that's done?  Have you ever wanted to ask the pastors a question, or wondered how they came to this church, or hear the stories of some of our current leadership team and how they came?   Or might you just have some unanswered questions about who we are, or what the priorities are, or where we're headed.  October 1, 2017 will be a time to set aside to explore all of that and maybe a little more.
On that first Sunday in October Pastor Brad, Pastor Laura, and a few of the Aldersgate leaders will be offering a free luncheon for anyone who is seeking answers to any of the above mentioned questions.  Or there may be other questions.  We 've never done an Exploration Class this way but thought it might be fun to initially offer something like this and then see where things go from there.  Lunch will be provided.  Questions will be answered.  Relationships will be formed and renewed.  And the spirit of grace that is Aldersgate will be felt by all.
If interested  just fill out the spot on the back of the Attendance Form and we 'll look forward to seeing you at the Aldersgate Exploration Luncheon 2017.  Lunch will begin following our second worship service around 12:30pm.  Childcare will be provided if you sign up for it in advance. Come!  You're invited!  All are welcome!

Gospel of John
Starts September 20
Starting on Wednesday, September 20, Pastor Brad will teach a class on the Gospel of John, in the morning from 10:00-11:30am and also in the evening from 7:00-8:30pm - same class at two different times.  You will learn about the authorship of the Gospel of John.  You will discover some of the primary focuses of the gospel.  You will compare the Gospel of John to the other three gospels. You will compare John's understandings about Jesus with those of Paul. You will explore why John is the only one to utilize the "I Am" statements. And there is so much more. The most important element in this year's study will be what the gospel can teach us today, particularly in the midst of all that seems to be swirling around us in the world. This 28 week study will be divided into three parts and it will run from September thru June with some breaks around the holidays. Yes, the study will build week to week, but every week will also stand on its own, so missing a few weeks here and there will be OK. We hope to have weekly study notes posted and available on the church website. Sign up on Sunday's attendance form if you are interested.
Sunday School Is Coming Soon!
September 17
On  September 17 we will kick-off a new season of Sunday school.  We will use a new Sunday School curriculum called "Digging In".   The kids will walk through the Bible from Genesis to Revelations for the next two years.  This will provide our kids the opportunity to really dig into the Bible, helping them understand Biblical concepts that will guide them daily, and help them grow in their faith and their relationship with God.

Kids' Club will continue to be offered at both services and the children will flow from Kids' Club into both Music Time and then Sunday school.  There will be three Sunday school classes for children; Preschool, Kindergarten-2nd grade, and 3rd-5th grade.  There is also a new Youth Sunday School class as well.

Sunday School teachers and teacher assistants are needed, so please prayerfully consider helping .  No experience is needed to be a Sunday School teacher!  Training is available and the curriculum is very user-friendly!
Adult Education Resumes
September 17
There are two adult education classes offered on Sundays between services starting Sept. 17.
  • The Book Study class meets in room 22 at 10:00am.  Led by Rich Detering, this class will study Rob Bell's newest book
What Is the Bible?   Everyone is welcome.
  • The Life Discussion class meets in room 21 at 10:15am.  Led by Rick Wilson and Tom Breske, this drop-in class explores a wide variety of topics, to include current events, moral issues, and theological beliefs.  Everyone is welcome.
Please Support Our Children's Programs
  • 2nd Sunday Dinners bring Club 345 and Youth Group together to share a meal before their fellowship time once a month.  There are typically 20-30 children, youth and adult helpers for dinner.  If you or your group would like to host a dinner, please sign up on the bulletin board across from the office.
  • Kids' Club is a fellowship time for kids during the Sunday church service.  For first service it typically runs from 9:10-9:45am and second service is from 11:15am-12 noon.  Kids' Club  can consist of all types of activities-art projects, stories, games, and much more. Please consider hosting a Kid's Club and sharing your talents, passion and stories with our children.  If you want to host a Kid's Club, but you just aren't sure of what to do, talk with Jen Hoerber as she has some activities all ready to go.  You can sign up for only one service or for both, or for just one Sunday or several.  Every bit helps!
Green Team meeting
September 21
On Thursday, September 21 at 11:30, the Green Team will meet at the church. Pastor Laura will provide a light lunch and all are welcome to come and be a part of this re-energized environmental ministry at Aldersgate. If you would like to be part of the team but can't make this first meeting, please contact Pastor Laura to let her know what would be a better time for you and/or how you would like to participate. Meetings are not for everyone but we do need your ideas.
Aldersgate Acolytes
"Jesus said: "I am the light of the world" (John 8:12).   The lighting of the candles is a meaningful part of our regular worship services.   The presence of the light reminds us of Jesus' coming into our world and into our lives. The light is carried into the worship service as a symbol of Jesus' coming into the presence of the worshiping community. At the end of the service, the light is carried out into the world to show that Jesus Christ is for all people everywhere. Children are invited to sign up to be Aldersgate Acolytes here.  Children should check in with the ushers 10 minutes before service on the day they are signed up to acolyte.  The ushers will show you how and when to light the candles and extinguish them.  Questions? Contact is Kate Ingalls.
Another Office Helper Needed
One person has agreed to help twice a month and so we need another one or two people to help round-out the month. This volunteer is needed on Mondays (preferably) or Tuesdays to help for two hours.   The duties include processing attendance forms, archiving bulletins, preparing children's clipboards, tidying up the sanctuary and narthex, and helping with occasional office tasks. We'd like the volunteers to start in Sept.  If you have questions, please sign up or contact Wendi in the church office, [email protected].
Lay Leadership Positions
Please consider using your God given gifts (talents, skills, interests) to serve at Aldersgate.    CLICK HERE  for a list of the places that we know of right now where your talents would be valued.  Please take some time to pray about which of these opportunities might be right for you at this time in your faith life. Pastor Laura and Christian Hampson are interested in identifying gifts in our church community and empowering people to use those gifts to the glory of God.  Pastor Laura and Christian are available to answer your questions and/or find the answers to them. They are looking forward to talking with you.
Cookies Needed
The freezer is bare!  Please donate cookies for the refreshment time between services.  Homemade or store bought cookies, muffins, and sweet breads would be appreciated. Please put them in the kitchen freezer.
Heartworks Workshops in October
Aldersgate will host a series of four sessions on Monday afternoons in October about end-of-life planning led by Martha VanDeMark of the Heartwork group. This series of workshops is a powerful way to discuss our own dying process and make our own decisions about what a good death might look like. The sessions will be facilitated discussions of 6-10 people and the cost is $125 per person or $100 per person if there is more than one person from the same family. Scholarships are available. It's a great experience for couples or children and parents to do together. Anyone who is old enough to have a driver's license is old enough to participate in the group. Please contact Pastor Laura if you are interested as the group is almost full. If there is enough interest, a second group may form at a later date.

Blues for Mister Charlie
Friday, September 15
A play by James Baldwin, performed by the Williams Project will be showing in Seattle September 6-17 and there is interest in gathering a group to carpool and attend together at Franklin High School on Friday September 15. If you want to carpool, please meet in the church's upper parking lot at 6:00pm and we will leave promptly at 6:15pm.  More about the play is below and at http://www.thewilliamsproject.org/. Tickets can be reserved online or by talking with Colleen Olleman or Pastor Laura.

In a small southern town, a white shopkeeper kills a black musician. As the case heads to trial and tensions rise, a Reverend, a journalist, and the shopkeeper's wife struggle to make sense of the truth. Written in 1964 and dedicated to the memory of Baldwin's friend and civil rights activist Medgar Evers, Baldwin's rarely produced masterpiece explores race and violence in the United States with honesty, music, dark humor, and compassion.

After the play, the cast will host a short discussion about the themes introduced by the play. The play is appropriate for high school age and older. All seats are general admission. Donations will be accepted at the door and the Aldersgate Outreach Team will donate for any who attend.
Meaningful Movies on the Eastside
6:30pm on the 3rd Tuesday, September 2017-May 2018
St. Margaret's Episcopal Church (4228 Factoria Blvd SE)
Gather with your neighbors for refreshments, a move and discussion!  The screening of the first film of the new series is on September 19.  The film is "Alive Inside" by Michael Rossato-Bennett.  It is a joyous exploration of music's capacity to reawaken our souls and uncover the deepest parts of our humanity - even for those affected by Alzheimer's or other forms of dementia.  It chronicles the astonishing experiences of individuals who have been revitalized through the simple experience of listening to music.  The goal of these screenings is to bring the community together to view a film and enjoy a moderated conversation following the film that invites and welcomes all opinions.  Come and join in the dialog!   Free and open to the public! There is a suggested donation of $5/person, but no one will be turned away!  RSVP's are helpful to plan food, but come anyway if you don't RSVP.  This film series is jointly sponsored by the Holy Cross Lutheran, St. Margaret's Episcopal Church, East Shore Unitarian Church, Aldersgate United Methodist Church, and the Muslim Association of Puget Sound - American Muslim Empowerment Network. RSVP Dick Jacke, [email protected].
