We tasted the 2012 Chateau Moulinet Pomerol last night. For the Left Bank of Bordeaux the 2012 vintage was tricky.
The Right Bank, where Pomerol is considered the star appellation, produced exceptional wines. Pomerol in general was the stand out success of the 2012 vintage in Bordeaux. Though the Moulinet benefits from breathing time
, the tannins are very integrated. The Moulinet is delightful when first poured
. The texture is silky, there is a creamy richness. The flavor profile
is baked wild cherry up front, then cassis and big blueberry at the finish. The Moulinet shows both old world characteristics and new. This Pomerol is spicy in a polished new world way.
Very enticing cocoa powder combined with a bit of leather shows both on the front palate and at the finish. Hints of
white pepper emerge at the very finish. We looked for lavender or violets on the nose, but what we found was white flowers and blue berries. This wine is very balanced and very sophisticated. Five years of perfect cellar aging shows in this bottle.
Very complex secondary characteristics are show cased, making the 2012 Moulinet a wine to simply contemplate on its own, without food if you choose. We chose to blackened filet mignon and sauté some red pepper and honey prawns. The 2012 Moulinet was big enough for the charred red meat and delicate enough to show with the prawns.

"Pomerol (800ha) undoubtedly looks like the major success in 2012. Given the climatic vagaries of the year, the appellation's warmer, earlier-ripening soils were a key factor, allowing the Merlot to ripen fully and be picked at the end of September/beginning of October before the heavy rain. Colours are good, alcohol levels higher than last year (13.5% to 14.5%), the fruit expressive and the tannins ripe and firm. Certainly the Merlot seems to have performed well, providing power, balance and charm. On the whole, the Cabernet Franc was not deemed quite as successful as in 2011, the percentage in the blends a little less and mainly issuing from older vines. Of course, at this level, selection and investment in the vineyard also played a part.
There are plenty of recommendations but finding 'good value' may be more difficult. "

2012 Pomerol are wines to be taken seriously. At their best, 2012 Pomerol wines can be rich, plummy, silky, opulent and fresh. Many chateaux produced very strong wines close to the level of quality found in 1998. Some of the smaller, less heralded properties made the best wine in their history! This is great news for consumers seeking stylish, quality wines at fair prices from Pomerol. While 2012 Pomerol produced the majority of the stars found in the vintage, this is not a year where consumers can purchase blindly as some estates clearly did better than others.
