Family, Faith, and Freedom

This summer, my dad went home to be with the Lord on Father’s Day.  His heavenly body was rejoicing in glory as we laid his earthly body to rest in the bucolic grounds of Middle Tennessee Veterans Cemetery.  Dad spent most of his life outdoors and, aside from church, that’s where he felt most connected to God; I know he would have loved the setting.  The headstones of a veterans cemetery are simple and uniform, resembling acres of tiny white soldiers standing at attention.  After the required information is inscribed, there isn’t much room for customization, but my brother and I were allowed to select three words to appear at the bottom of the headstone.  How does one sum up the measure of a man and his 75 years of existence in just three words?  The task seems insurmountable, but I must tell you, the words came quickly and easily - faith, family, and freedom.  My father was a humble man with simple pleasures but he was hardly simple-minded.  He knew what was of eternal value and he chose to focus on that - and that alone.

Those three words came back to mind this past week as I enjoyed several days in the woods of Cleveland, GA with our middle school students on their annual retreat.  Like many summer camp settings, our students enjoyed the freedom to swim, zip-line, kayak, and much more.  But unlike many camps, they also grew in their faith as they enjoyed worship, chapel devotions, and small-group Bible study.  Retreat is an ideal setting for each grade to bond as a family as they build a deeper relationship with the only One who loves them more than their parents and teachers - their Holy Father.  Family, faith, and freedom, it would seem, are just as important here as they were to my father.

There is another thing that happens at retreat; something of great significance to our entire school - the selection of our annual theme verse.  For many years, our eighth grade students have been charged with this responsibility and time and again, they have risen to the challenge.  This year was no exception.  Drawing inspiration from Paul’s words to Timothy, it is my pleasure to share with you here for the first time, the theme verse for our 20th anniversary school year:

“Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith and in purity.”  1 Timothy 4:12

Sure, our students are still young with most of their lives still ahead of them.  But don’t believe for a moment that they can’t have an impact in their grade, in our school, and in this world.  In fact, our future as “one nation under God” depends on it.  I’m looking forward with great expectation to what God does with and through them this year.  I hope you are as well.

Blessings,

Jim R. Callis
Head of School

Yearbooks for Sale
Research of previous years has shown that a number of MBCA yearbooks go unclaimed and unused.  In an effort to reduce that waste and be better stewards, we are asking  families who value the yearbook to share in the cost of their child's book this year.  For a quick and easy purchase, order your yearbook  online!  Yearbook sales will also be at the Main Campus during Scoop Nights.

August 14: 6 - 7 p.m.
August 15: 6 - 7 p.m.
August 22: 6 - 7 p.m.

Cash or check only for purchases made at Scoop Night.   The pre-order price is just $35, far less than the full cost of production.  The cost per book will increase to $50 following fall break.  If you have any questions, please contact faculty yearbook advisor, Christi Hattingh.
Morning Drop-Off for Lower School
We have enjoyed seeing so many parents walking in to drop-off their children.  All of our new students are doing an outstanding job of finding their way to their classrooms independently.  For those who may still need a little extra support, our friendly MBCA staff is always around in the halls and are more than willing to help.  Now that the year is underway, we are asking walk-in parents to say goodbye to their students in the Academy lobby beginning Monday, August 14.  Also, please remember that our carpool lines run in the morning and afternoon if you would prefer dropping your child off in carpool.

New Procedure for the Early Eagle Program

All Lower School students who arrive at school prior to the 7:50 a.m. morning bell will need to go to our Early Eagle Program which will be held in the Academy Library.  There is no charge for this program

All students who attend the Early Eagle Program must be accompanied into the building by a parent/guardian where they will need to sign in each day.

Lower School students may not be dropped off to enter the building by themselves prior to 7:50 a.m.  Lower School students must either be walked in by a parent/guardian and be signed in to the Early Eagle Program or wait in their cars until Academy staff are stationed in the carpool line, which begins unloading cars at 7:50 a.m.

As always, the safety of our students is our top priority.

Think Tank
As we opened the Think Tank this week, students in first-fifth grade were given the challenge to create a name tag that would stand up by itself.  They were only allowed to use paper, yarn, toothpicks, and pipe cleaners.  Students in JK and Kindergarten read the book, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, and then worked in groups and used blocks, craft sticks, and letters to build their own chicka chicka boom boom tree.
Middle School
Marshmallow Challenge
Seventh grade classes participated in a Marshmallow Challenge this past week utilizing problem-solving skills and collaboration.  The winning team had to construct the tallest structure, using spaghetti sticks, a marshmallow, string, and tape.  Teams had only 18 minutes to accomplish the task and the structure had to be free-standing.  Congratulations to Sawyer Lanneau, Colette Pearson, and Ayden Shaw for constructing the highest structure at 28 inches!
