Fall 2017
Dear Friends,

I hope this letter finds you well. We have some interesting news to share about what the Delaware Sea Grant College Program (DESG) has been doing over the past few months, but first I want to extend another invite to attend Coast Day on Sunday, October 1

Coast Day is the annual open house at the University of Delaware's (UD) Hugh R. Sharp campus in Lewes, DE, and is a partnership between the College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment and DESG. The event is free and open to the public, and includes numerous activities for the whole family including a touch tank, tours of UD's research vessels, presentations by UD professors. Live music, local food vendors, and a Crab Cake Cook-off and Oyster Shucking Contest add to the fun!

I would also like to announce the Coast Day Photo Contest. This year's theme is "Discoveries: on land, in the air and at sea" and we are looking for photos of Delmarva's beaches and wetlands that highlight the intersection of land, air, and sea. To enter, simply post a photo to Instagram, tag it with #DECoastDay, and follow @DESeaGrant. The winning photo will receive $100 and winners will be recognized at Coast Day. The contest runs until September 27.

More information about Coast Day and the Photo Contest can be found on the Coast Day website. We look forward to seeing you on October 1!

Thank you for your continued support of Delaware Sea Grant.

Regards,

REPORT: Coastal Delaware Resiliency

Delaware is susceptible to the effects of a changing climate, including sea level rise and more severe weather. Meanwhile, Delaware's coastal economy is worth an estimated $6.9 billion. The Coastal Delaware Resiliency Report describes ways that the coast, and particularly the tourism industry, can prepare for and better cope with natural hazards.

Sea Talk: Reducing Marine Debris

Trash left at the shore can have big consequences for marine life that mistakes it for food. Practice "leave no trace" principles the next time you head to the beach.
