Walnut Grove Roadrunner Newsletter September 10, 2017
Fall Picture Day

Walnut Grove's Fall Picture Day is this  Wednesday, September 13th. All students will have their pictures taken on this day, both individually and with their class.

You can still pay for pictures in advance online, or you can send money with your child on picture day. By now, your child should have brought home the picture form from school.

Room Parent Meeting

There will be a meeting for all Room Parents on Friday, September 15th at 9:30am in Room 401.  If you are a room parent and can attend, we'll be discussing job responsibilities, rules and guidelines, and classroom events.

For more information, please contact our Room Parent Coordinator, Stephanie Schieder.

Recycling Day

This Friday, September 15th is our first Recycling Day of the year.  Recycling your bottles and cans is a great way to raise money for grade levels at Walnut Grove.

Please bring your bags, separated by cans and bottles (no glass) to the front of the school by flagpole on Friday morning by 8:15am with your child's grade level clearly marked on the bag.

The money earned will be distributed to the applicable grade levels, and the teachers for those grades will decide as a team how to best utilize the funds.

If you would like to be a Recycling Rep for your child's class, please contact the teacher.

School Smarts

There will be a School Smarts Parent Engagement Night on Tuesday, September 19th from 6:30pm-8:30 pm in the Multi-Purpose Room.

School Smarts is an award-winning program that helps parents understand the education system and thus helps their students succeed in school!  Everyone is invited to come learn about this program.

The entire family is invited.  Dinner will be served.  There will be a fun family art project.  Childcare will be provided.

Please RSVP online here:  WG School Smarts PEN - RSVP

If you have any questions, please contact Walnut Grove School Smarts facilitator, Shajilk Kammili at  [email protected]

Fun Run

Walnut Grove's 7th annual Fun Run takes place on Friday, September 29th. Your Roadrunners would love to see you there for this colorful, community-building fundraising event!

We'll still need volunteers to work with Room Rep parents to coordinate helping out with the water station, the Hub, Thursday setup, and more. Please watch your inbox for messages about signing up and if you haven't already, please make sure you've completed your volunteer clearance. Thanks, and we hope to see you on the funnest day of the school year!

Important Information/Reminders

  • Child safety at WG is our #1 priority!  We would like to ask that all kids riding bikes please try to utilize the pathways in the park wherever possible.   Kids can enter the school from the gate nearest the MPR, but keeping bikers off the sidewalks that cross over parking lot entrances is safest, so utilizing pathways through the park is the best route for all children.
  • Just a friendly reminder that the Staff Parking Lot near the chill zone is not to be used for child drop off in the morning. Please safely drop your child off in designated drop off locations or along non-red curbs.
  • Volunteers, please submit your clearance forms!  If you plan on working in your child's classroom or at the Fun Run on September 29th, you cannot do so until you have been cleared through the District.  Fill out this volunteer clearance form now to avoid any delays in being able to volunteer.  So if you haven't already submitted the online form, now is the time!  Also, if you will be driving on any field trips, you must also submit a driver insurance form. Please do so early to avoid any delays. Click here for the form.
  • Vision and hearing screening are coming up on November 7th and 9th. We are in need of a few parent volunteers to help out. If you are able to help, please contact Ali Hall.

Attendance Awareness

Did You Know September is Attendance Awareness Month, because absenteeism in the beginning of the school year can predict poor attendance throughout the school year.  Studies show that students who miss 2-4 days in September were 5 times more likely to be chronically absent than students who were absent fewer than 2 days.  Parents can support their students by encouraging them to start the year off strong with consistent attendance to set them up for success throughout the rest of the school year.

If there is something that is preventing your student from attending school, you can reach out to your school's Child Welfare and Attendance Liaison (CWA). Part of their role is to help you overcome obstacles that stand in the way of attendance by troubleshooting issues and connecting you with resources in the community.  As a district, we value attendance and want to partner with you in getting your students to school.   If you have any questions or concerns about your child's attendance, please contact your school's CWA, Deborah Tomlin or (925) 461-6117.

Amador Cheer Clinic

Amador is having a Cheer Clinic on Sept. 23rd! This clinic will be run and instructed by the Amador Varsity Competition Cheer Squad and the game day portion will be run with the assistance of Varsity Cheer.

Kids will learn cheers, dances, games and enjoy lunch with our competition cheerleaders. On game day, September 29th, they will be invited to perform during half time at the 7:00PM varsity game!

For more information, check out this flyer and for the registration form, click here.
