From Our Principal

Good morning WHS families,

Last week was an exciting week at WHS.  We had a club fair and our first pep assembly. Additionally, our department leadership team had an opportunity to meet and discuss several relevant topics related to WHS.

Recently, we received a report regarding our average ACT score at Westlake High School.  The AVERAGE ACT score was a 24.8 for a Westlake student.  In comparison, the state average is a 22 and the national average is a 21.

Speaking of tests, Westlake High School will have a delayed start on Wednesday, October 11.  The seniors and freshmen will not have to report until 11:15 am.  The sophomore and juniors will report to school at regular time and will be administered the PSAT test.  The Preliminary SAT, also known as the PSAT/NMSQT® (National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test), is a preparatory version of the SAT exam. You can only take the PSAT once per year, and most students take the test in both 10th and 11th grade.  Should you want more info, please click here

Many families have asked about teacher webpages.  Teacher webpages can be accessed here.  If you have specific questions, I encourage you to contact the teachers directly.  Their emails are also on the link above.

As a reminder the WHS announcements can be found here. These are updated each afternoon.

WHS conferences are on Tuesday, September 19 and Wednesday, September 27. Conference sign-ups are on-line. If interested in a conference time, please sign up here

Finally, Abby Heller, a Spanish teacher at WHS recently went on maternity leave.  We have secured Mrs. Cheryl Bendik, a former WHS teacher to replace Mrs. Heller while she is on leave.

As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to reach out to us.

Have a wonderful week!

Counselor's Corner

COLLEGE APPLICATION TIMELINE - The school counselors will be in the senior English classrooms this week to review the college application process.  We will login to Naviance with students and walk through recommendations, syncing with Common App, transcript requests, and common deadlines.  Students will receive a handout in class and we will post it on the counseling website after the classroom guidance presentation.

COLLEGE VISITS - Colleges visits allow juniors and seniors to hear directly from admissions representatives what their school is looking for and ask questions in a small group setting!  Often the college reps will be one of the readers for the applications from WHS so it's a great opportunity to put a face to the name!  This week's visits include:

Monday, Sept. 11
Cedarville University, Allegheny College
Tuesday, Sept. 12
Youngstown State University
Wed., Sept. 13
The Ohio State University
Thursday, Sept. 14
University of Cincinnati, Binghamton University

PSAT - On Wednesday, October 11th all sophomores and juniors will take the PSAT.  The PSAT is a practice SAT and a good opportunity for students to get a feel for higher stakes testing.  It can also assist students in identifying focal points for studying for the ACT or SAT based on the feedback of their strengths and weaknesses from the PSAT.  This is especially helpful for juniors as they will go on to take the ACT at WHS in March.  Additionally, juniors may qualify for the National Merit Scholarship (given to approximately 8,200 students annually) based on their PSAT score. More Info l Prepping for the PSAT

CCP STUDENTS OFF-CAMPUS - Please have your CCP child sign up! In an effort to stay more connected with our College Credit Plus (CCP) students taking classes outside of WHS, we have created a "Remind" Group to allow us to easily communicate important information. Visit rmd.at/k2bh8a to sign up or text @k2bh8a to 81010.
