KlezCalifornia

ONE WEEK FROM SUNDAY

KlezCalifornia Klezmer Workshop & Jam
September 17, 1:00-3:45pm
At Jewish Community Library
1835 Ellis Street, San Francisco
(free secure parking in garage)

Led by internationally-renowned klezmer
Joshua Horowitz

Josh will build up a repertoire of easy-to-learn rare tunes in the old style from the ground up. Participants will learn how to finesse three traditional group accompaniment styles (Terkisher, Duevo, and Hora Lunga) and will learn ornamentation, melodic variation, fills and bass lines. He'll tackle techniques for on-the-spot arranging, teach secrets for creating and maintaining energy, and develop bandstand communication techniques. Students will learn useful ways of practicing based on Josh's gentle and methodical ear training and will receive notation of all tunes following the class.

Participants of all ages welcome. Must be at least intermediate level on your (acoustic) instrument. No klezmer experience needed (but it doesn't hurt!). Mute required if you are a brass player. Bring a recording device if you wish. To get a head start, check out sound files in advance.
