As summer draws to a close and schools open their doors again, Labor Day comes around like a well-deserved break to workers in the United States.
Labor Day in the United States is a public holiday that honors the American Labor movement and the contributions that workers have made to the strength, prosperity, laws and well-being of the country.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the holiday is "a creation of the labor movement and a yearly tribute dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American worker."
But while it is celebrated in modern times with BBQ's and sales shopping, the holiday came out of a long battle for worker's rights in the country. Representatives for the workers and for the employers working together to ease the tensions between the two sides.
The Chamber is the only entity in our community that represents business of all sizes, industries and stages, from entrepreneurial startups to established corporations.
The Escondido Chamber's advocacy efforts focus on creating an atmosphere in which business can succeed and create jobs and the community can flourish. We are the primary voice of business in the community working with local, county, state and federal policymakers on issues that improve our regions business environment.
So here's to celebrating Labor Day, to you and your family, to the "unofficial end of summer."
And remember "Labor Day is considered the last day of the season when it is acceptable to wear white."

Escondido Chamber of Commerce's Rising Stars!
The Escondido Chamber of Commerce has a long history of involvement with our youth, who will be the next business leaders, innovators and problem solvers. From the development of the MAP Program, guaranteeing admission to Cal State University San Marcos, to raising support for the PAL (Police Athletic League) who work hand in hand with at risk youth.
This Fall, we will be launching a new program, honoring High School students who serve the community called "Rising Star Student of the Month". Each month, a senior student who is chosen by their teacher, counselor or principal from the Escondido Union High School District will be honored and encouraged by their parents and the chamber at a breakfast event.
By April 2018, we will have honored 49 seniors.
We are reaching out to you to be a part of this program:
- Swag bag items (total of 50)
- Sponsor a Breakfast
- Fund a scholarship (total of 7 scholarships awarded per year)
Scholarships will be presented to one student from each school, at the annual Grand Ave Festival on May 20, 2018. The scholarships awarded will depend on the amount of funding raised from people like you. It is our wish to provide a $1,000.00 scholarship to each of the seven students.
We would greatly appreciate your participation! The chamber is relying on the community to support this event, from breakfast sponsors to swag bag donations to funding the scholarships.

The Roynon Museum of Earth Sciences & Paleontology on Grand Avenue in Escondido doesn't have any skeletons in its closets, but it has them everywhere else. And this week it is working to add three extremely rare specimens to the "Badlands Collection."
Saturday the museum welcomed two colleagues on loan from the San Diego Natural History Museum in Balboa Park to help assemble three fossils that were discovered in the Badlands of the Dakotas. They are working with Keith Roynon, the founder of the museum, who, although turning 80 this year, doesn't seem to be slowing down at all, or losing any of his enthusiasm for adding to the museum-which is made up largely of his personal collection from a lifetime. Roynon looked with satisfaction at the spot where the three specimens will rest after the restoration work is done. "Now, with these I will have a top-notch collection from the Badlands of South Dakota!" he said.

Demolition of the old Wagon Wheel Restaurant and Palm Tree Lodge on the east side of Centre City Parkway between Washington Avenue and Mission Avenue is nearing completion as workers prepare to build a shopping center.
The restaurant, where generations of
Escondido
residents enjoyed breakfast, and the lodge shuttered several years ago. In 2015 plans were approved to build a 15,870-square-foot commercial shopping center that will have three buildings, two of which contain drive-thru restaurants along with other retail or restaurant tenant spaces. The third building will be a drive-thru self-service carwash with 26 customer vacuum spaces.
Meanwhile, work is progressing on several other high-profile projects in the city, while other projects remain dormant.
Heavy machinery is moving tons of earth along La Terraza Boulevard just east of Interstate 15 and south of West Valley Parkway in preparation of the construction of a long-awaited business-class hotel.
It was nearly 30 years ago that approval was first given for a hotel on the site, but several attempts by the private sector failed. A company with an established track record of hotel development, Excel Hotel Group, stepped in two years ago and was able to get the city to include incentives that made the project financially feasible.
The result: a 105-room Marriott Spring Hill Suites hotel should be open by 2019.
