What's Happening at PVCC!  |   September 2017

PVCC is buzzing with activity, as the 2017-2018 school year begins!  This year it was kicked off with a unique celestial phenomenon...the Great American Eclipse!  Students viewed the eclipse with a sunspotter, a telescope and special glasses provided by the Astronomy Department.  The excitement continued throughout the week as Student Life greeted new and returning students at their Welcome Tent giving directions, reminding students of all the great resources on campus and of course, providing refreshments, giveaways and music!  With the new semester, comes some great new and returning course offerings such as: New Venture Law & Finance, Chemistry & Society, Life in the Universe, International & Domestic Terrorism, Intro to Global Health, Electronic Music, Interm/Adv. Glassblowing, Hip Hop: Arts, Aesthetic and Culture.   Learn more about our amazing campus and course offerings. We are off to a fantastic start!

Employee Convocation Energizes Staff

PVCC faculty and staff took part in an uplifting and informative Employee Convocation on August 15.  Presentations by our President, Dr. Dale and our Vice Presidents focused on a number of initiatives and exciting projects that PVCC will be engaged in throughout the year. The Strategic Plan which outlines the college's goals and its commitment to being a Learning-Centered institution has been updated.  The Puma Pathways program has been created to help students successfully complete their education cycle through Preparing, Engaging, Committing, Completing and Thriving.    And, in addition to "bringing learning alive" on campus this year, faculty and staff will be celebrating PVCC's many accomplishments over the past 30 years.  One of the college's greatest accomplishments is the success stories of its alumni.  Two alumni, Kelly Fitzsimmons Burton and Adrionna Hatfield, gave inspirational speeches at convocation that reminded everyone of why they are a part of PVCC.

Durandet Receives STEM Award

INSIGHT into Diversity Magazine has selected Casey Durandet, PhD, PVCC Physics Professor, as recipient of the 2017 Inspiring Leaders in STEM Award!  This national award recognizes leaders from underrepresented groups who are making a difference in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).  Durandet uses her experiences to inspire and mentor young women interested in pursuing STEM careers. She helps students perform real-life experiments, conduct hands-on research, and present their findings to their classmates. Durandet has also coordinated the college's STEM/STEAM Summer Camps for underrepresented high school students since 2012 and the Annual Mancini Science Symposium since 2013, as well as, helped coordinate the PVCC North Valley STEAM Expo this past year. She has also established a cosmic rays lab on campus, with equipment donated by Fermilab, for students to engage in particle physics research.  Additionally, she is co-chair of PVCC's STEAM Advisory Committee.  Congratulations, Dr. Durandet!
New Program for Veterans

PVCC has received a grant in the amount of $5,100 to create a new program just for veterans in the community and their family members (over 18) that will provide an opportunity to explore ceramic art techniques and avenues of expression starting September 9, 2017 through May, 2018. The program will meet in the PVCC Ceramic studio and will be conducted by David L. Bradley, PVCC residential faculty and Frank Krevens, MFA, PVCC adjunct faculty. The program is a collaboration between PVCC and Arizona Artists Guild. Arizona Artists Guild has hosted an arts program for Veterans since June 2014, to provide artistic experiences and knowledge to veterans in our community. Please share this flyer with veterans who might be interested or email [email protected] for more information. The program is free but space is limited.
Weitz Uses Eclipse to Educate

Jenny Weitz, PVCC Astronomy Professor, traveled to Madras, Oregon, one of the prime viewing destinations for the Great American Eclipse.  Weitz was a telescope field manager for a Star Party on Sunday night and the eclipse on Monday morning.  She ensured everyone had a safe and fun eclipse experience.  In addition, she assisted the Science Channel in managing a telescope for two hours to keep it pointing at the Sun while the reporter conducted interviews and live coverage.  Back in Arizona, the Astronomy department coordinated viewings at the main campus and Black Mountain, as well as Grayhawk Elementary School, where teacher Michelle Lindstrom said, "It was an educational experience of a lifetime and these students are completely excited about astronomy now."  More excitement from the Astronomy Department for the whole community!  Come to the unveiling of the new 14" Cassegrain telescope, Star Parties and STEAM Nights... complete schedule.

Alumni Spotlight
Ruben Rincon, PVCC Alumnus

Former PVCC Pitcher is now pitching opportunities for the AZ Diamondbacks. Ruben Rincon credits coach Victor Solis, for helping him to stay the course as he completed his associates degree at PVCC and then went on to pitch as a scholarship athlete at Grand Canyon University.  As a current Arizona Diamondbacks employee, Ruben utilizes the skills he obtained in Cariann Powers' public speaking class at PVCC on a daily basis.  These speaking skills, coupled with his understanding of the human brain via his favorite course, Psychology 101, are invaluable to Ruben in his current position. Community Support & Partnerships
Desert Ridge/MIM/PVCC Partnership

Desert Ridge Marketplace is pleased to present Jazz in the Courtyard featuring PVCCs talented faculty musicians. Held on September 10th, October 8th and December 10th from 12-2pm, the Jazz Series is led by PVCC music faculty, Dr. Brett Reed, and showcases PVCC instructors in the ensemble.   As PVCC faculty, the musicians bring their musical experience to the classroom in courses ranging from ensembles to music theory to private instruction.
