Sunday Sept 10,Join our St. Nicholas Parish Family for the 2nd Annual...

Come celebrate the beginning of a New Church and School Year!

For all students, teachers, administrators and staff. We hope to see you here and remember... STUDENTS BRING YOUR EMPTY BACKPACKS!
On Sunday, Sept 10, we ask our Parish Family to help with the sermon by bringing in a family heirloom.

Heirlooms represent family, history and memories. They are dear to us for many reasons.

Someone in your family may love the silver candlesticks from your great aunt, while you're more interested in the crazy quilt your great grandmother made by hand.
Identifying with specific heirlooms is half the fun and one of the things that makes visiting an antique shop so interesting.

Those who bring heirlooms will have an opportunity to share a few words on why the item is close to you and your family!

Father Demetri's Message
Family and Friends of St. Nicholas,

As our Parish Family still mourns the loss of a lovely lady who gave so much
to her parish family, I wanted my message for this month to be the
letter that was written by her children - Daphne, Nicholas and Christina.

May our Lord assign Efthemia  a place of rest among His Saints and Holy
Ones!  MAY HER MEMORY BE ETERNAL!

PC President's Letter
Dear St. Nicholas Family,

We're shining bright both inside and outside at St. Nicholas -- for the outside, thanks to a fresh coat of paint! Both the church and parish house are undergoing a much needed sprucing up.

We continue to make progress with our 2017 Parish goals: The Master Planning Committee is finalizing plans for its three options (Rebuild, Rehab or Sell/Move). Once these plans are presented to the Parish Council, a special general assembly will be held for the community to decide which is the best option for our future. Our finance team is keeping everything in check and looking to plan the 2018 budget. The new Orthodoxy in Action Committee is planning a field trip to the St. Vladimir Orthodox Seminary in Yonkers, New York (see flyer). Please look for several other activities planned for the fall in this newsletter.

The Ministry Registration Fair, held throughout the month of September, will give everyone the opportunity to learn about all the existing ministries at St. Nicholas. Even if you've been part of a ministry  forever  we are updating our databases. This will allow us to communicate more effectively so please make sure to put your name down - again!

The falling asleep of our one-and-only Efthemia Zervoglos was a shock to all of us. She embodied the church's teachings and touched so many of us. May her memory be eternal.

PHILOPTOCHOS
The Ladies of Philoptochos is having their first meeting of the fall season on Monday, September 11 th  at 6:30 pm. It will be hosted in St. Irene's hall for a change with snacks and refreshments as we hope to outgrow the conference room downstairs.

The theme of this month's meeting will be "Remembering 9/11" with a short clip on our TV and discussion.  A lso, we will be collecting ideas for new themes and activities we can do as a group each month. For example, we can  host  a Paint Night, rent out a movie theater, or bring in a guest speaker.  For those of you who have Facebook, a St. Irene's page has been created so you can see upcoming events and photos. (You can search for it:  @st.irenephiloptochos )

Our goal is to spark the interest and energy of all women in our parish that are age 18 and older. We want to take away the stigma that Philoptochos is a 'group for seniors' and embellish the fact that we can learn so much, help people, and have fun together- no matter the generation.

My request for current members this month is to reach out and personally invite a friend or family member who hasn't attended a meeting in a while or at all. Hope to see you there!

God Bless,
Eleni Saledas     [email protected]    803.514.8696
GOYA
Welcome back GOYAns and families. Eleni and I hope you all had a wonderful and relaxing summer. We also hope you all had the chance to reflect, pray, attend a church service, and perhaps attend camp. As the school year starts, so does another great year with your fellow GOYAns.

The Splagounias family will be hosting a welcome back pool party in September and we hope everyone can join (more details to come). This year we will continue to fundraise towards a mission trip, learn more about our faith, and grow closer through fellowship and service activities. Eleni and I look forward to the coming year. If you have an activity or something you think GOYA should be a part of, please let us know.    If your family would like to host a GOYA family dinner, also please let us know.

Eleni and I would like to thank those of you who came to the Paraklisis service in support of Kyria Efthimia, her husband, her children, and her grandchildren, your fellow GOYAns. With her recent passing, we pray may her memory be eternal and we ask that you keep her family in your prayers during this difficult time.
STEWARDSHIP
Dear St. Nicholas Parish Family,

Happy (almost) fall!  While summer is my favorite time of year, living in New England gives us a special blessing as we're able to enjoy the striking variety of weather associated with each season. Fall brings with it cooler, crisper air... a slowing in the growth of gardens and lawns, and the start of new sports seasons. It is also a time when most vacations come to an end and it is a beginning for those of school age to return to formal learning.

It is also the start of the Orthodox Ecclesiastical year and with it, a reminder for each one of us, from His Eminence Archbishop Demetrios, " ... to deepen your commitment to the liturgical life of our Orthodox Church. I ask this, knowing that the purpose and order you seek in your life will be found in strong communion with God and in tender care for His creation. I also ask this because we must be witnesses of righteousness, truth, and of a divine order that will lead people to salvation. Through our faith and our life within the Church, our lives and the lives of others will be constantly transformed and will become hymns of glory to God the Creator and Lord." (emphasis added)

As we strive to strengthen our commitment to the liturgical life of our Orthodox Church, I would like to thank all for their past and ongoing giving of time, talent and treasure. The months of July and August saw a further increase in those who have returned Stewardship Commitment forms, with an increase of seven additional families!

And thank you to all who continue their stewardship through electronic giving or automatic contributions. This regular giving is tremendously helpful for our Treasurer, our Finance Chair and our Maintenance Chair, to name a few who count on our stewardship contributions to help them in the work they do so well.

A summary of treasure through 8/22/17:
2017 Stewardship goal: $177,625
Total pledged amount: $158,392
Number of families pledging: 154

With love in Christ,

PRAYER LIST
Pondering on the words of St. Paul, "Let no one seek his own, but each one the other's wellbeing. (I Cor. 10:24). Give rest to the weary, visit the sick, support the poor, for this is also worship. Aphahat

For any prayer concern (salvation, health, employment, stress and anxieties, etc.) please send baptismal names only to:   [email protected]

We may not be able to help others materially or medically, but God does hear our prayers and always asks us to pray for each other and so build up the Body of Christ (Eph. 4:11-16).

A gentle reminder to all Fellowship hosts: Please keep in mind that families hosting coffee hour (children's table and main table) are responsible for clean up after completion. We appreciate your help with keeping our parish clean and treating it as your own home...because it is! Thank you.
