Program Description
As psychoanalytic practitioners, we are often confronted with questions about the effectiveness of the psychoanalytic approach compared to other models of psychotherapy. Does it really work? Is it worth the time and money when shorter term and cheaper therapies are available? We have our own clinical experiences that give us conviction, and this is a good start. But can the effectiveness of psychoanalytic treatment be studied using a more empirical research method? And, if so, what does the research say?

As the co-editor and co-chair of the IPA's Open Door Review of Outcome and Process Studies in Psychoanalysis (3rd edition, 2015), Professor Marianne Leuzinger-Bohleber is in a unique position to help us think about these questions. She is an expert in the study of the various approaches that have been used in recent psychoanalytic research as well as current research findings. In tonight's talk, using a diagram of clinical and extra-clinical research in psychoanalysis, she will make a plea for the creative use of a broad spectrum of research strategies, both quantitative and qualitative. In addition, she will offer several illustrations from her own ongoing psychoanalytical research projects, including the LAC depression study, which researches the effectiveness of controlled long-term psychodynamic and cognitive-behavioral (CBT) treatments for chronic depression, and FIRST STEPS, which is a psychoanalytic prevention study with traumatized migrant families.

Audience
MD's, Psychologists, LCSW's, MFT's, Registered Nurses, and other learners interested in developing psychoanalytic understanding.

Course Objectives
As a result of this course, participants will be able to:
1. Identify research methods that can be utilized in studying the efficacy of psychoanalytic psychotherapy;
2. Compare the outcomes of psychoanalytic and cognitive behavioral psychotherapies in patients treated for depression;
3. Assess the impact of early psychoanalytic intervention with traumatized migrant families.
