Our Mission
"The Danville-Boyle County Chamber of Commerce exists to advance the prosperity and well-being of the business community, particularly its members, with a goal of improving the quality of life in this community."

Paula's ponderings
Hello Members,

Several projects are underway - or soon to be underway.

Please read the exciting news, in the box below this article, of a new health insurance plan for small businesses that we are now able to offer our members. It should save many of you money for your business.

Our Total Resource Campaign gives you an opportunity to promote your business by sponsoring a variety of products and events. This assists your Chamber with funding our budget each year so it is a win-win for all. (Many do not realize that we receive NO PUBLIC FUNDING. Our budget is from membership support and fundraisers.)
We need volunteers to help sell our many sponsorships for 2018. This is a 5-6 week project and a fun way to meet other members. Past volunteers will be contacting our members who purchased last year offering them the chance to buy the same sponsorships prior to the campaign opening up to all in October. (The only exception is our Business After Hours. These are nor renewable each year to give more members a chance to showcase their business and products and services.) We appreciate your support and encourage you to talk with our Chamber volunteers when they call.
For other members who would like to join us for 5-6 weeks to help sell sponsorships, WE WELCOME YOUR HELP! If you are a member and are interested in a particular event of product, please let me know. We will include you on a list for our volunteers to contact.

We also will be offering a timely workshop, sponsored by Serv Pro of Versailles, Nicholasville, and Danville, on Disaster Preparedness on September 21 from 8:30- 9:45 a.m. at the Boyle County Public Library. As part of the National Preparedness Month, we have two presenters; one from the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and one from the Small Business Administration (SBA) sharing great information on how to prepare and what to do after a disaster strikes. You will have handouts and workbooks to take with you after the workshop. Thanks to our sponsor, we will offer continental breakfast, and ServPro will have materials for you to take home, as well. Please call the Chamber office to register at 236-2361, ext. 120. We need an accurate count so our presenters will know how many handouts to bring.   This is a regional workshop with Mercer, Garrard and Lincoln Chambers, as well as the Heart of Danville. PLEASE RSVP by calling 859-236-2361, ext. 120.

On September 21, from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Holiday Inn Express & Suites will host our Business After Hours. Join GM Melissa Fightmaster and her staff as they showcase their new property.

Finally, though listed last in my list, but equally as important as the rest above, our Entrepreneurship class is underway at Boyle County High School. Under the direction of David Christopher and in collaboration with our county school system, the Danville-Boyle County Chamber of Commerce teaches students how to take an idea, write a business plan and create a business. The growth and health of our economy is tied to the development and growth of small businesses. We need mentors to help these students develop their business plan. You are a guide for them - they must do all the work. If you can give a total of five hours between October 25 and December 6, we could use your help! Please let me know if you can join us in preparing our business leaders of the future!

Please feel free to contact me: 859-236-2316 Ext. 121, 859-583-6540 or email [email protected]

Roads less traveled
There's another side to Boyle County that many people don't know about and never see. While many know about Danville's various attractions and come to the city for business and entertainment, fewer travel the back roads to see the county's beautiful rural settings or the farms that generate $17.9 million in economic activity annually.  To see the entire article from The Advocate-Messenger's Ben Kleppinger, click  here.

How Your Retail Business Can Manage Seasonal Cash Flow Fluctuations,
Ebbs and flows are a natural part of running a retail business, and it's not uncommon for your cash flow -or encounter a downturn-at certain times of the year. Managing these dips and upswings can be a challenge: making sure there is enough cash available to maintain operations while also satisfying customer needs. However, keeping tabs on your cash is crucial for the success of your small business.

The New Size is Custom: How Retailers Are Using Personalization to Win Customer Loyalty

It's been a long time since I walked into a store and bought a one-size-fits-all sweater that didn't really fit or a pair of shoes that pinched when I walked. With a growing demand for customization in consumer products, the simple fact is that we're no longer forced to buy an off-the-shelf product that isn't quite right. Add to that the rise in e-commerce competition and peer-to-peer portals offering authentic, tailor-made experiences, and the future of retail is evolving.  Read the entire article

IRS Newswire - Don't Take the Bait
Think a data breach can't happen to you? Think again... "Don't Take the Bait."
Tax professionals increasingly are targets of national and international cybercriminal syndicates that are well funded, digitally adept and tax savvy. Each week the IRS receives three to five reports of data breaches at tax professionals' offices. That rate is not sustainable.
To assist tax practitioners to better protect themselves, the IRS, state tax agencies and the tax industry, partnering as the Security Summit, have launched a 10-week "   Don't take the Bait" campaign detailing specific scam tactics and how to counter them.  These news items are being issued each Tuesday.

Here are the first three news releases plus an associated fact sheet.

McDowell Place of Danville celebrates National Assisted Living Week

A weeklong celebration kicks off on Sunday, September 10, and McDowell Place of Danville is joining tens of thousands of assisted living communities across the country for the festivities.  It's National Assisted Living Week through Saturday, September 16, and McDowell Place of Danville is honoring this year's theme "Family is Forever"
The "Family is Forever" theme for National Assisted Living Week was inspired by a quote from the famed poet Maya Angelou: "Family isn't always blood, it's the people in your life who want you in theirs: the ones who accept you for who you are, the ones who would do anything to see you smile and who love you no matter what."
National Assisted Living Week was created by the National Center for Assisted Living (NCAL) in 1995 to recognize the role of assisted living in caring for America's seniors and individuals with disabilities. The annual observance inspires assisted living communities around the country to offer a variety of events and activities to celebrate the individuals they serve, as well as to help educate members of the public about this distinct aspect of long term care.
"We encourage members of the community to come visit McDowell Place during National Assisted Living Week," said Matherly. "Whether volunteering to spend time with our residents, or learning more about assisted living and our services, everyone is welcome to join the McDowell Place family."

The activities scheduled at McDowell Place encapsulate the "Family is Forever" theme and include:
·         Frank Lawson Memorial Cruise-In, Car show with proceeds to benefit Walk to End Alzheimer's
·         Trivia Night with Mike Archer, September 12th, Families are invited to join this fun team trivia event.
·         Assisted Living Week Celebration, Party to celebrate our families, friends, and extended families.

McDowell Place of Danville is a 98-unit independent living, assisted living and personal care community located in Danville, Kentucky. For more information about McDowell Place of Danville or to schedule a tour, please call (859) 239-HOME (4663) or visit the website at www.mcdowellplacedanville.org
