Water Tax Measure On Hold After Many Stakeholders Express Concerns
State Senate Bill 623 -- the water tax measure -- is not moving ahead in 2017 after significant concerns were expressed by stakeholders statewide, including many groups from San Diego County. The Assembly Appropriations Committee decided against moving the proposed bill to the floor in late August, effectively pushing the issue into 2018.
The Water Authority took a position of "oppose unless amended" on the bill, which was designed to increase access to safe drinking water for disadvantaged communities and had the water tax language added late in the legislative session. While the agency supports the goals of the legislation, there are better ways to achieve them than creating a first-ever "water tax" on residents and businesses.
Other local entities who opposed the tax included: California Chamber of Commerce, San Diego Regional Chamber of Commerce, Vista Chamber of Commerce, Oceanside Chamber of Commerce, Otay Mesa Chamber of Commerce, San Diego Regional Economic Development Corporation, and East County Economic Development Council.

Learn More About Major Pipeline Projects in La Mesa and Spring Valley
The Water Authority is ramping up outreach before construction activities kick off in late September for the Lake Murray to Sweetwater Reservoir Pipeline 3 Relining Project. The Water Authority's project team is holding two open houses to discuss the work. Look for the Water Authority's canopy and table at one of the locations below:
- Thursday, Sept. 7, 6-7 p.m., Baltimore Drive & Bertro Drive in La Mesa
- Thursday, Sept. 14, 6-7:30 p.m., Aztec Park on Aztec Drive in La Mesa
The Water Authority will also set up a project information station at the La Mesa Farmer's Market in early October and periodically through construction, which is scheduled to continue through summer 2018.

Free Landscape Design for Homeowners Workshops
The Landscape Design for Homeowners Workshop is a three-hour class that teaches homeowners the basics of water-efficient landscape makeovers.
Topics include soil, design, turf removal, plant selection, planning, irrigation, rainwater catchment and implementation -- all the steps on the path to a beautiful, WaterSmart landscape.
