Permit Free Garage Sale Weekend - Residents are encouraged to take advantage of the permit-free garage sale weekend on September 8-9.  Participants can host a garage sale and avoid the normal $5 permit fee.  As an added incentive to participate in this citywide event, the City will help promote your sale for free on the city's website.  Simply visit  www.cityofwestland.com to register your sale and send buyers right to your home.

Vintage Baseball Game - The Westland Historic Commission will be hosting a Vintage Baseball Game on Saturday, September 9 at Westland's Jaycee Park, located at 6210 Wildwood.  The game will be played with 1867 rules when there was no designated hitter and there were no mitts.  The Greenfield Village La-De-Dahs will be playing an exhibition game against a team made up of supporters of Westland's Historic preservation efforts including Mayor William R. Wild and other local officials.  There is no admission fee for this event, but snacks and refreshments will be available for purchase.  The event will kick off at 11:00 a.m. with a special ribbon cutting ceremony for the brand new baseball diamond at Jaycee Park that will include several dignitaries and members of Westland's Youth Athletic Association and the Westland Warriors.  The game will begin immediately following the ribbon cutting at 12:00 p.m. and will be played until 3:00 p.m.  

Saturday in the Park -  Wayne County Parks' Saturday in the Park program has returned. Each Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., visitors can walk, run, skate or cycle safely along six miles of Hines Drive. Hines Drive will be shut down o vehicular traffic from Ann Arbor Trail to Outer Drive so that guests have the opportunity to participate in their favorite activities in a vehicle-free environment. The Saturday in the Park program will take continue every Saturday through September 30. All ages are encouraged to participate.  Parking is available at the Hines Park-Helms Haven Area (Hines Drive, west of Outer Drive) and Hines Park-Nankin Mills Picnic Area (Hines Drive, east of Ann Arbor Trail).  For more information about Saturday in the Park or any other Wayne County Parks program, please call (734) 261-1990.

H20 Zone Free September Saturdays Offered -   Beginning Saturday, September 9, the H20 Zone will be open on Saturdays from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. (weather permitting) and there will be no cost to enter.


Scheduled Upcoming Civic Meetings - Residents are invited to attend the upcoming City meetings.  Below is a list of the meetings with their date, time and location:

Tax Increment Finance Authority
  • The Westland City Council will meet on Tuesday, September 12 at 8:00 a.m. at Westland City Hall, located at 36300 Warren Rd.  

Police and Fire Civil Service Commission
  • The Police and Fire Civil Service Commission will meet on Wednesday, September 13 at 9:30 a.m. at Westland City Hall, located at 36300 Warren Rd.
     
Civil Service Commission
  • There will be a meeting of the Civil Service Commission on Wednesday, September 13 at 4:30 p.m. at Westland City Hall, located at 36300 Warren Rd.
Local Development Finance Authority
  • The LDFA will meet on Friday, September 15 at 9:00 a.m. at Westland City Hall, located at 36300 Warren Rd.

All American Farmers and Artisans Marketplace - The Marketplace is the ultimate site for farmers, growers and producers to sell their own products directly to the public and a great place to find the finest locally grown produce, flowers and handmade goods.  The Farmers Market will take place every Thursday from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Central City Park, located at 1901 N. Carlson.  

Wayne-Westland Back to School Bash - The Westland Alliance for the Arts has partnered with the Dance Academy to throw a free back to school bash on Friday, September 15 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m at Westland City Hall, located at 36300 Warren Rd. The event will feature a kids dance party, bounce houses, face painting, a photo booth and raffles.  

POW/MIA Ceremony -  The mournful sound of taps will be heard as veterans groups gather at the Bova VFW Post in Westland for the city's annual POW/MIA Day ceremony on Friday, September 15 at 6:00 p.m. at 6440 N. Hix.  Residents are invited to attend the ceremony as we gather to honor the commitments and sacrifices made by those who have served our country.  

Free Bulk Drop Off - For residents looking to rid themselves of large items, there will be a free bulk drop off day on Saturday, September 16 from 8 a.m. - 2 p.m.  Westland residents can bring their bulk items to the DPS yard, located at 37137 Marquette and drop them off at no charge.  Proof of Westland residency will be required.  Examples of acceptable items include major and small appliances, carpet and padding, furniture, televisions, toilets and other generic bulky items. This is a residential program and commercial and building materials will not be accepted.  As part of Westland's Compassionate City Initiative, residents in need of assistance due to age or physical disability can call the Mayor's Office at 734-467-3200 by Friday, September 15 to make special arrangements on this day.
